TCM aired a 10 minute + program last night in between movies, where the VP talked about finding the lost footage of the movie in the 1980s, and restoring the movie. I don't remember if they were talking about the Haver cut specifically or not. I should have been paying closer attention to it.

This is coming out on June 22nd, but it's not being carried at Best Buy. (I work there, and it's an online only title. It's not showing in the in-store stock system.) Guess I'll have to go Amazon or Wal-mart online. I hate not getting films on release day. I feel like I've been waiting for this particular film since Blu-ray first began.

There was a restoration of the film in the 80's (around '83 I think) - but that's not the "lost" version. This is a HD version of that cut, which is 176+ mins, not the full version that supposedly a copy has recently been revealed to exist.

If only the same thing would happen for Cleopatra...

I don't know what's going on with TCMHD. Most of the wide screen movies look terrible. DR ZHIVAGO and GYPSY were unwatchable. Let's see how FLOWER DRUM SONG looks tonight. I hope we can see the restoration work on A STAR IS BORN next week. It could be Time-Warners transmission--

Got A Star Is Born yesterday The digibook is gorgeus, one of my favorites in my collection, along with Doctor Zhivago, 300 and North By Northwest.

How is the picture quality/sound quality?! (I'm sure it's great, but I'd love details!!!)
I'd love to buy this in stores on Tuesday, but my local Fye, Wal-mart, Target, Barnes and Noble, Borders, and Best Buy aren't carrying it. I'm out of luck. Guess I'll have to pay shipping on Amazon, and wait a few extra days. I was really looking forward to this one on release day!

But some really boring extras for such a film. No commentary? No documentaries? That's just being lazy. I'll just take "A Star Is Bored" Looney Tunes, and leave it at that...

How is adding more than two and a half hours worth of bonus material lazy?

Did you noice an intermission card after the "Born in the Trunk" scene?

It seems like such a travesty that they could just throw out 1/3 of a film like that and not even save it in a vault somewhere...
Actually, to preclude any confusion that might befall others unfamiliar with the "Cleopatra" saga, the 4-hour 9-minute film that is out on DVD right now is the completed version.

You are referencing all the extra footage Mankiewicz had shot and his hopes Darryl Zanuck would release two three-hour films. Zanuck looked at all of the footage and nixed the idea. He oversaw the editing, shot scenes to fill in gaps (film continuity was a shambles) and approved the 4-hour 9-minute cut. It's that cut of the film that was severely edited during its roadshow engagements in 1963.

There were never two completed films in a final edit with scoring...ever.

The dream has been to find the footage and experiment with it to see if Mankiewicz' vision might be fulfilled. It would be interesting, but be mindful that this vision was never fulfilled or released.

This is my second post here, and my first time at this site. I read Kenneth Brown's review of the BD of this film, and found it quite insightful and accurate (I have just finished watching the film on BD).

I was confused by a comment he made about Warners spoiling Cukor's plans and forcing him to shoot the film in CinemaScope rather than in Technicolor.

CinemaScope is not a color process. And the film was shot in Technicolor. Actually, both processes (video and color) were used.

I'd sort of believe he meant Technirama, but I don't know if that process had evolved at that early date. Warners was the first studio to use CinemaScope after Fox trademarked it and introduced it in "The Robe".

I could find no means of commenting on his review on the review page.

Ah, sorry about that. The sentence was meant to convey two pieces of information, but somewhere in the review-editing process I mismanaged the phrasing. I fixed the sentence so it shouldn't cause any confusion now. Please let me know if you notice any other problems

As for sending a message to a reviewer, if you click on a reviewer's name (go to any review and look directly below the title blurb just above the bulk of the review text) it will take you to a page that has a list of our recent reviews, as well as a "Contact" link near the upper right corner. Simply click on the link and you'll be taken to our profile page. There, you can either leave a message for all to see, or send us a private message. We're always around, so feel free to contact us anytime.

Thanks again for the correction - it's most appreciated. And welcome to the site! Let me know if you have any questions, or need any help finding any one of the many features we have to offer!

The negatives and prints were handled at the Technicolor labs but it was not filmed in the "3-strip Technicolor" process. No widescreen movie was ever filmed in "Glorious Technicolor".

I just got home with my copy that I bought at BestBuy. Maybe it was a fluke?

Someone probabLy bought it online, and returned it to the store or something, or maybe they carry it in your region only. Who knows.

I watched the whole thing...one thing really frustrated me though.
There was an intro on the Special Features disc, and it showed about 30 seconds of the James Mason scene as Norman Maine the sawshbuckler.
I have seen photos of this for years, heard stories about it...imagine my surprise to see footage of it in the "introduction" and then they show it for about 6 seconds and put narration over it...you can't even really see/hear what's going on! Why didn't they put this footage as it's own supplement?

That's a good point being that was the only one they had in stock.
I have not seen it yet. I'll get a chance later in the weekend. You gotta admit though, that's a huge digibook it came with.

I actually love Digibooks, especially the larger ones. Amadeus and Star is Born are my favorites. I still need to buy Doc. Zhivago and North by Northwest!

I ordered my set from Amazon and it's missing disc 2. Do I have to exchange it through them? Or is there a way to contact Warner and have them send it to me, since it is their packaging error? I emailed them on Tuesday when I got mine and haven't heard back. Anybody have a number?
