I know more information should go with my question, but I'm just trying to be plan as possible.

If you were to add an amp to the 805, What is the min. amount of power you should get to make a difference in quality sound?

You'll notice a difference adding an Emotiva XPA-2 or even an XPA-5.
I did when I added both of them with my 876 (which is the same as my ex-805, power wise).
And then I added the 886 pre/pro for another notch in audio quality (with my Emo amps of course).

That’s pretty much what I thought. a while back, I did have the UPA-7 and there was no improvement at all, as a matter of fact, they seem to be about the same or the 805 was out in front a little bit to me.

Some people thought something was wrong with my set-up or my speakers didn't need an amp or a bunch of whatever....

After talking with one of the Emo guys, they agreed to compare the UPA-7 to the 805, but I never heard from them again.

I kept telling them, that the 805 is a freak of nature and it is one hell of a beast.

I love it so much, when my apt. was broken into and it was stolen, believe me, I went on a hunt for another.

My 805 is still kicking! I'm not impressed with any other 80x series. My Infinity Beta 50s sound great with it. Sadly, I have a desire to change speakers. Just for something new. Looking at some PSB Image T6s next for my 805 to feed.

My 805 is still strong. I kind of need to update the firmware- got a new PS3 slim and was bitstreaming and got the DTS bitstream bomb. I ended up switching back to multichannel (no difference anyway).

I have updated firmware on computers, tv's, routers, modems, etc across the board, and only the 805's method scares me. It's just a weird way that I can see getting screwed up really easy, and I'm way out of warranty obviously.

With that minor caveat I love my 805. Those of you that still have it- had any problems with the display? I had to replace the resistors as one of them blew a few months back.

I haven't had any problems with my display since I bought it in '07. It has been on the dimmest setting since then though. As much as I like the blue light around the volume, the display is way too bright.
I never updated my firmware, I'm running 1.04. A DSP update should do the trick to fix the "bomb"
I believe THIS LINK
will allow you to download the DSP update. It's been so long since I've done it though, I can't remember the whole process other than I burned the file to a cd rom and plugged my cd player into opt 1 on the back. If you google Onkyo 805 dsp update there should be plenty of info so you can get it done.

Ahh...good find! So the picture posted is correct then.

Well, its still a bit odd. The stock picture shows seven HDMI ports in the rear yet there are clearly eight on the unit that was disassembled. I'm wondering if there are foreign versions with dual HDMI outputs as this appears to be the case with that unit. I'm sure the US version only has seven ports in the rear including only one HDMI output.

There are 6 inputs on the back, 1 input on the front, and one ouput on the rear.

7-in, 1 out

I have decided that the 808 is going to replace my old AVR-247... now to save up $1,299 CAD...

From the Onkyo site

Check the pics of the disassembled 808 and you will see that there are eight HDMI ports on the rear. That's the Japanese version by the way. I'm guessing that the Japanese version differs from the US version in a few ways. I don't see 12V triggers on the Japanese version either.

That's the key right there; and for Stereo Music I use Pure Audio mode.

* That's why those resistors failed; people leave their 805 in permanent 'TORCH' mode!
...No good for those tiny 1/4 watt resistors!

The problem is with the number of HDMI jacks; on the back there are seven (7),
but on the inside there are eight (8)!!!

* Something just ain't right here.
...The best is for someone to remove the top cover of his 808 and post some inside pictures.
That would be the end of it!

On the Japanese version there are 8 hdmi jacks on the back panel. You looked at the photos right?

Of course I looked at the pictures! Did you?
...Because if you did, there are 7 HDMI jacks on the rear panel, viewed from the rear.

EDIT: Alright, I see now what's going on; on the 808's Japanese version there are indeed 8 HDMI jacks, which two of those HDMI jacks are outputs. ==> That is the major controversy (confusion) right there!
And it's on the 707's Japanese version that we see 7 HDMI jacks, which only one is an output.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

* If only I could read Japanese!

And the North American versions of the 808 and 708 have both the exact same number of HDMI jacks,
which are 7 on the rear panel (6/1 = only one output on both models), plus one more HDMI input on the front panel.

> Now the big question is: Is the inside of the 808's Japanese version the exact same as the North American one?
The proof is in the pudding!

Yup...that IS the big question right there! I decided to go to the Japanese site and and let google translate to compare the specs to the US specs. The Japanese version's weight is listed at 18.4kg, and the US version is 18.3kg so based on this information I'm certain they are pretty much the same inside. I'd still like to see the inside of a US version though.

Jack, look at those two fans though, isn't it strange the way they are oriented with nothing above them???

* Anyway, for $500 you got a nice pre/pro, with free amplification for 7 channels.
Sooo, what's to complaint really about? ...And it's still over 40 pounds! ...Good size transformer, and a very decent heatsink too. And those caps, perhaps 15,000 uF a piece?
Good stacking of the power amps too. Plenty of HDMI inputs, plus one on the front.
Ethernet port too! USB!
Man! I remember just 10 years ago, I paid $2,000 for a receiver that has WAYYYYYYYYY much less features than this one!!! And it weighted less too!!!
The times they are a-changin'.

I don't know...all of the vents are on top of the receiver, and since heat rises it seems to make sense that they blow heat directly up once its dissipated by the heatsink. Yeah, it is amazing how much you can get for your money now. Receivers with loads of features used to cost an arm, a leg, and a little blood. LOL!

Well, the left fan has a transparent plastic cover (semi-circular tunnel) on top of it; so it blows air to the heatsink (indirectly), as the right one blows the hot air to the top.

* But then, people were criticizing the single fan positioning from the 806 and 807, so I guess Onkyo did improve here somehow.

Sorry to hijack the post. What is the advantage/use of a networking AVR?

Thanks.
