Not sure if anyone has posted this. What does this mean for blu-ray. Is Disney considering going HD-DVD?

Maybe it's because Disney knows the triple layer discs won't work in current players so if they come into the market everyone who went HD DVD will be alienated and forced to buy a new player...perhaps a Blu-Ray player this time!

Makes complete sense to me that Disney would vote for it. I would vote for it if I was them. No matter how confident they are in Blu-ray they have to know there is a chance that HD DVD will win, in which case it would be better for them for HD DVD to be less limited for space. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the HD DVD group will be going to 1.5x spin rate and higher bandwidth from that, which I think many there realize was a mistake, but would probably be too hard to fix now. But at least they could make their format less space limited per disc.

Because if disaster happens, they want the extra space
It means nothing. Disney is Blu's strongest software backer, and they put their money where their mouth is This whole article is just filled with FUD talking points Besides, if they actually make it, the mountain of coasters it;ll make will make wonderful talking points to toss back at them on yields ![]() |

I read the whole post and once getting to the bottom I realized how HD-DVD biased it really is. Anyone else find this statement biased:
"Among Hollywood studios HD DVD is supported by New Line Cinema, Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. Studios, whereas Sony Pictures, Walt Disney, Warner Bros. and Twentieth Century Fox endorse Blu-ray." I personally find it very odd that they'd mention new line for HD-DVD and not for blu ray which makes it seem like stuidio support is evenly split. I also don't think much of this vote. If anything, I think Disney is voting for it because triple layer is going to hurt HD-DVD or result in nothing as from everything I've read it's not going to be compatible with current players. It's one thing for bonus features like PIP not to work on older blu ray players, but imagine not being able to even watch the movie because it's on a triple layer disc. |

I agree, this means nothing, and the title of the article is clearly meant to spread FUD. Big deal, so they decided to make a vote, that they are entitled to make, just like all the other members, for the next level of the format.
There's nothing wrong with looking at something based on its own merits and deciding on it. I wouldn't take this as any indication of a potential change in formats than I would of Disney buying out Universal just because a high-level executive decided to join his family at the competition's theme park... |

1. Disney is exclusive to BD. If they want to go HD DVD, they must consider going neutral first. If they go direct to HD DVD, it would be strange. 2. Disney has its own Blu-ray logo, just like "Disney DVD", it is named "Disney Blu-ray Disc" (see my avatar). I believe it will involve trademarking process, which involves costs, etc. Warner does not have its own BD logo. I don't know about para, as I don't own para titles in hi-def EDIT: Fox also has its own BD logo Last edited by w_tanoto; 11-19-2007 at 11:50 PM. |

From the article-
At the Steering Committee meeting in September Walt Disney Home Entertainment voted for triple layer twin-format HD DVD as well as triple layer HD DVD 51GB revision 1.9 preliminary media standards, according to the notes from the event available at the DVD Forum. During the meeting, twelve steering members of the DVD Forum out of twenty approved the former and eleven members approved the latter. In both cases Walt Disney voted for the new HD DVD standards, whereas Samsung Electronics, which supports both Blu-ray and HD DVD with its Blu-ray disc (BD) and unified Blu-ray/HD DVD players, decided to abstain in voting for the 51GB HD DVD, just like some other members of the Blu-ray Association, who always withdraw from HD DVD votes, namely Hitachi, JVC, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Sharp and Sony. Why is Disney(the only one from the Blu Ray only camp) voting on something that might help HD DVD to even the odds with Blu Ray instead of abstaining like all the other BR folks? I have never been one to post if any studio is about to switch or become dual format, but this has me wondering WTF is going on, also remember that Disney help design HDi with Microsoft. We had hints about Paramount when they said that Star Trek was only coming out for HD DVD six months before Paramount went HD DVD only, this Disney thing could be something or nothing. |

More importantly- Disney is the hardest of the hard core when it comes to region coding. They don't even have a plan to implement that on HD DVD yet
Disney is hardest of the hard core on copy proteciton. AACS is busted wide open, BD+ appears to be effective in holding the pirates off for those critical first weeks. Disney split the HD DVD camp early on for exactly those reasons. The HDers have been screaming Disney is going for years. They will be dragged kicking and screaming at the last possible moment in the horrendously unlikely event this were to happen Do you really think they'd be BOGOing, sponsoring the magical tour if they were even considering it? |

Ya know, the more I keep seeing Stringer's "stalemate" comment mentioned in articles, the more I keep thinking the guy made a complete mess of things. This is really going to get a lot messier before things end. Right now I am not seeing an end to this "war" anytime soon, if ever. Other companies abstained from voting and Disney should have as well if they really want to put their money where their mouth is.
The hardware manufacturer's could end this now if they wanted to as well. No way Toshiba is bigger than Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, JVC, etc. Even with MS behind them. |
