I was just getting comfortable with buying blu-rays until I saw this bomb drop this morning. Now I dont know what to do. I own both players. Last edited by Blue; 09-10-2007 at 04:59 PM. Reason: Moderated Thread title to make it align with the reference |

Your title was 51GB HD-DVD discs now in production. The article does not say that, so either reference the article that does say that or quote the article you reference correctly. There are still numerous other issues they have to overcome before they catch up with Blu-ray, like max bandwidth, copy protection (Fox is not going to move without that) and industry support. TL51s are pointless for data storage as they offer no extra features for significantly extra cost (due to the third layer) over BD50s. As for movie distribution, as I said in another thread: if a film is ever commercially released on a TL51 I'll eat my PS3. |

Oh DVD Town...that biased site claimed HD-DVD was "safer" than Blu solely because there weren't Blu-ray 1.1 players available yet, claiming that meant it had 'incomeplete' specs. Yet now, their supposed format of choice has introduced a disc that has not been proven to work in newer players, and they sing its praises. Hipocrites.

These kinds of discs are not going to be able to be run in ANY existing HD-DVD player.
You will need to buy a whole new HD-DVD player just to run it, and it will cost more. Plus, if you think for an instant that Blu-ray has not thought of this too, you are wrong, in fact there is a rumor of a 200 GB Blu-ray disc in development. Of course neither of these will run movies, since no existing players can read them. SO relax! THis is FUD and hype to try to make the Blu-ray look inferior when they have to take extra steps to try to mimic the natural abilities of a Blu-ray and yet still be unable to compete with them in film releases. |

That won't bother the HD DuD faithful as the combo discs already lock up ton of players. Like the combo discs,.. they will be able to get the DVD version of the film to play and they will be alright with that. -Brian |
