Default 1080/24p, but no 1080p?

I have a reciever that's fairly old. It passes only 1080i, or so I thought. After a bunch of recent tests, I found that for some reason, the reciever (Yamaha HTR-5990) passes 1080/24p from the PS3, but not regular 1080p. With regular 1080p, the picture is distorted and somewhat snowy. But with 1080/24p, it's flawless. Anyone have any clue why this is? It's the oddest thing in the world...

less bandwidth is needed at only 24 vs 60 for standard 1080p.
I believe that 1080p/24 is even less bandwidth than 1080i/60.

That's what I was guessing... But I do want the 24fps enabled, right?

It's not just pass through. It also accepts PCM 5.1... (pass through is where it just lets the picture pass through without doing anything with the sound, right?)

Test it. go direct from the PS3 and/or the S1 to the Bravia.

They both look identical (well, I mean when using 1080/24p). I don't think my BDP-S1 forces the 24fps though cuz it only detects the reciever as 1080i where as the PS3 actually forces the 24fps. I am not 100% sure on that though, as I only test the BDP-S1 for like 30 seconds.
