Alrighty then.. The disc format would not have been approved if it was not proven to work. If you're so sure the TL51 will not play on older players then I propose a friendly wager.

If the TL51 disc fails to play on an HD-A2 (which is what I own) I will buy you a single blu-ray disc of your choice (no box sets, I'm not made of money! lol) and will never post again on this website.

If the TL51 disc does in fact play on an HD-A2 you buy me a single HD DVD of my choice.

Deal?

Though I hate to use Amir as a reference point, he has stated several times that Disney had voted in HD DVD matters for years even when everybody else associated with Blu-ray does not... and it hasn't changed Disney's stance yet...

Because the belief in one has absolutely no affect on the probability of the other. They are independent, and must be analyzed independently.

I'm sceptical about everything.

Even if the Hitachi demo is of a replicated form disc, then that doesn't get us any closer to a replication line capable of manufacturing it with commercially acceptable yields.

Hitachi is claiming is that all current players could be updated to support the form. They've stated that.

Toshiba engineers have stated on several occasions the older HD DVD players would be incapable of being updated to TL51.

What is faith, and what is fact?

This could also be a sign that Disney is seeing the inevitable stalemate in the format war. They would more than likely produce on both formats if there is no clear winner. Something something about providing the best HD quality product to as many people as possible. There is no point in supporting only one format when there will be no clear winner.

Either way, they are probably just trying to keep their bases open.

He is correct that Disney does not abstain I looked it up

To summarize

The sky is not falling

There is no better friend to Blu than Disney, who has sponsored the magical tour, numerous BOGOs and all the buy a deck, get 5 free offers.

TL51 is specs on paper, BD-100 is demonstrated to be real, neither one likely to ever make it to market as a commercially pressed disc

The disc IS proven to work..on drives that have been physically tuned for it

The question is and keeps being whether or not they can actually manufacture them at anything approaching acceptible yields (and last I heard from the tests they've done, that number is so far away from where they are right now it's not even...well, no it is really funny).

Like TotalHD before it, there simply isn't the yields to make it practical in any way shape or form, at least not yet. Combine that with a dying market and almost certain incompatibility with their currect install base, whywould they make them at all?

It's spin, just like the whole Disney thing. It's desperation, and after this onedies down there will be some other new bull they concoct. They're simply trying to spoil Christmas sales as much as possible so they don't lose Warner and that's all

Seeing as how I'm unlikely to collect on any of my bets with HDers (the smash your deck club), I've decided not to make any new ones.

WDHE's president Bob Chapek sees something inevitable, but it's not a stalemate:
Quote:
In my mind, the artificial extension of the format war, through whatever incentives were given, was counter to the consumer. The consumers made their minds up what format they preferred by some pretty large margins, and [the Paramount and DreamWorks decisions to back HD DVD exclusively] just served to extend what's an unnecessary format war, and confused the consumers and put at risk those who may now buy a format that will become obsolete very shortly.

Aside from that little momentary distraction, consumers continue to buy Blu-ray Discs as more players come on the market and discs become more prevalent and start to gain dominance at retail. When Blu-ray first came out it was getting 50/50 shelf space with HD DVD, and now the shelf-space has clearly turned in the favor of Blu-ray, and that means the sales will only continue to slide towards Blu. That will make the already inevitable outcome seem even more inevitable.

What one man says and what one company does don’t always have to be the same. It all could be one big smokescreen.

Paramount was vocal about how much they loved blu-ray right up until they switched sides. Warner says how much they love Blu-ray and are going reconsider the stance on the format war but nothing happened and probably will not happen.

I don’t doubt that they love Blu-ray and that Blu-ray is their choice to win. But what if no format wins? You think they are just going to release on Blu-ray only? They are going to try and reach as many consumers as they can. So what if that means going to HD-DVD.

Agreed. But there's no reason to ruminate so morosely and constantly about imagined possibilities unless you want to depress the hell out of everyone else. Misery loves company, I guess.

Deal?
If you are going to make a bet, then you should make sure you define what "work" means in this instance. If the first 2 layers work, but the 3rd layer doesn't work reliably enough for studios to put content on it that they expect to work in 1st and 2nd generation players, then does that count as working?

At one point Amir posted about TL51s likely or possibly coming with 1.5x spin rate, but I don't think he has been willing to address that issue for a long time. Probably because the 1.5x that many of us have asked for isn't coming along with it. I was thinking of offering him a wager of $1000 where I took the side that it wouldn't come with 1.5x spin rate for 1st and 2nd gen players at least (I figured if that influenced them to do 1.5x spin rate with the resulting bandwidth, it would be worth it to me), but then Microsoft had that reorg and I don't think he has all that much influence anymore anyway.

^^^ Don't matter, Wicky doesn't want to play.... Must be chicken. I kid I kid...

By work, I mean when/if a TL51 title ships. As in a final product in my hands at my house in my player.

So, if the movie plays because they only put that on the first 2 layers, but things on the 3rd layer either don't play or play with problems (like stutters and/or lockups), who would win the bet?

Shouldn't this thread be retitled:

Disney votes to make all existing HD DVD players redundant overnight.

Can't you just imagine the faces of the fanboys / Sony Haters popping a 51GB disk in their prides and joy only to find out that they have been shafted with out of date technology .

PS. There is another thread on this topic... maybe should be merged.
