A spokesman from Microsoft recinley annouced that the next version of Windows would be released on HD-DVD. Does this mean that the next generation of Dell, HP, Sony, Panasonic, and Samsung PCs will not have Windows???

Where did you hear them say that they intend to distribute Windows on HD-DVDs? The only thing I've heard is that Microsoft Japan recently announced that they plan to support HD-DVD in Longhorn, which isn't much of an announcement at all in my opinion. They have to support all hardware and formats that consumers use with their computers.
I suggest reading this article for a bit more information: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/07...an_blue_laser/ |

At the same Microsoft didn't rule out supporting Blu-ray... Talk about sitting on the fence. They might as well have announced that the next version of Windows will support hard drives!

![]() ... then again, the next version of HD-DVD might be based upon Blu-ray, at which time the cumbersome HD DVD, HD DVD-ROM, etc. may be replaced by BD, BD-ROM, etc... Besides, the professional version of Blu-ray works perfectly well with existing versions of Windows, and if the consumers buy the consumer version, it would be rather strange not to support it. Even Microsoft is interested in market forces, and if they can make money out of it they'll support it ... ![]() Note also that the website mentions that Sony are developing a combined Blu-ray/HD-DVD drive for PCs ... 8) |

![]() If a PC drive supports both HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs and has codecs as required to support both BD-ROMs and HD DVD-ROMs, as far as the PC recording data or even video is concerned the only difference between HD-DVD and BD will be capacity, and where HD-DVD might achieve 32GB, commercial BD has already reached 50GB, with 100GB and 200GB single-sided on the roadmap using existing technology. Perhaps the HD-DVD camp will buy optical heads from Sony to achieve HD-DVD/BD/DVD/CD compatibility? ![]() |
