Default The Golden Compass

just saw it last night at a sneak preview. read the books 5 years ago and couldnt be happier with the film. it was awesome. wish they would have kept the last three chapters of the book in though. with the effects and the great scenery this will be a great blu-ray release.

New Line.

they must be in some kind of cahoots now with Disney because they played the "Prince Caspian" trailer before this.

Yup, newline cinema is owned by disney.

I am waiting for LOTR trilogy to hit the BD. It would generate such large revenues for newline/disney............

Prince Caspian trailer out? Going to see Compass now, probably.

Im still anxiously awaiting Narnia on Blu, the extended cut - let's hear it for animal warfare.

Doubt that (should be out before summer), but it could come out on Blu Ray first if New Line is staggering release dates for this one.

New Line has been using Blu Ray's region coding capabilities, and the HD DVD release has come later for some of their new releases due to staggered theatre release dates in various markets.

Time Warner, just to clear up any confusion in case there are any. New Line Cinema is an independent studio, Warner Bros. has no control over their decisions. It's Time Warner that may be the influence in their decisions.

Looks like a great movie and would definitely look amazing on Blu Ray.

As for LOTR, New Line needs to hurry up with that one. As someone else stated, it would bring in a huge amount of money for them. Just look at all the people that bought the original DVDs and then the extended edition. I know I did. Just hope when it is released we get the extended cuts.

I am in the same boat with you, I am very anxiously waiting the release of The Lion. The Witch, and The Wardrobe on Blu but honestly I will think we will all have to wait until May/June to coincide with the release of the Prince Caspian

Everyone who wants something on DVD says "I know it'll make a huge amount of money"

Even in the (statistically rare, but in this case 100% true) event that that's true, Hollywood is all about one thing:

Money

Specifically quarterly income reports

So would they rather dilute that huge LOTR bump that'll come later by dribbling it out?

No

they want that "500,000 copies first week best seller ever" thing

And LOTR can be that and they know it. Hobbit is coming, I personally doubt it before at least next Christmas, and probably Hobbit for the extendeds

Newline releases Blu-ray and DVD at the same time. However, the HD DVD version has to wait until the international theatrical run is over (Hairpray, Rush Hour 3). Great advantage for Blu-ray!

Saw it too, and liked it a lot. Favorite movie of the year? No, but still very good. Should make for a great hi def release.

(fwiw, I didnt get the caspian trailer, so dont necessarily expect it if you are only going for that)

New Line is owned by Warner.

I refuse to see the movie. I hope this one bombs.

It's ironic that the next Narnia movie was previewed during Compass. Pullman wrote his trilogy as a counter to the Narnia series. He hated it and C.S. Lewis.

Saw this one last night. There was some interesting stuff, but overall it just didn't grab me like some other movies. I would grade it maybe a 7 out of 10. At the end there were a few claps in the theater, but not much and it died real fast.

If Nicole Kidman is really Catholic then I wonder if she didn't see the obvious anti-Catholic church stuff here before she signed on. I don't want to start a debate on this stuff, but just wanted to mention that I am in favor of the anti-Catholic church stuff, so that isn't why it didn't grab me.

As far as releasing on Blu-ray first (if New Line is still neutral), it is hard to tell from the release schedule on boxofficemojo.com. It doesn't come out until March in Japan, but Japan is the same region as the US for Blu-ray. Unless it ends up with some more dates in other parts of the world that are next year, it doesn't look like New Line will have the region encoding excuse for releasing the BD first. I'm hoping they are exclusive to BD by then, but just wanted to point this out, since the reason they've given for releasing some HD DVDs later is because the film has come out later to theaters in other parts of the world.
