Default Golden Compass

Anyone see the previews yet? Looks like Narnia meets Harry Potter meets LOTR = badass. And it's New Line, which means a Blu release in the future, w00t. Discuss!

The Golden Compass was heralded as the next BIG thing in young adult literature. It didn't take off like Harry, but from the previews of New Line Cinema's trailers and TV advertisements, it appears that it might do better as a movie. I hope to see good things from it.

I guarantee you they've cut all the hard edges out of it. There' a lot of religious and political undertones to the book that would not sit well with middle america.

I was actually pretty bored with the books... not because of the story, just the writing. Looking forward to the movie though.

They have changed all the "church" references to "the magisterium" to make it less offensive. From what I've read though, the story is anti-extremist religion, not anti-religion like some people claim. Personally, I don't really care either way. I'll watch it, and if it's well made and entertaining I'll buy it.

I thought the books were great. Very well written instead of dumbed down like Harry Potter. Maybe that was their downfall. And not anti-religion at all, but about the eternal fight between those who wish to oppress and control and those who wish to evolve and move forward. It's a very pertinent message for these times and I hope it doesn't get lost in all the cool CGI. Don't forget to fight the opressor, kids! Hee hee.

I have to disagree. The author has publicly stated his views about what the books are about. He is an atheist who hates everything C.S. Lewis wrote, esp, The Narnia series. He accused the first Narnia book of being mysoginist, and racist. The bad guys are the church and in the end God, who is pictured as a senile old man, is killed and everyone becomes free.

I read the first two books and threw them away after reading a review of the third. I was already unhappy with the direction I saw them going in and the review confirmed it.

If the first movie does not do well, the other two will not be made. That is what I am hoping for. As a writer, he doesn't even come close to the talent J.R.R. Tolkien had.

It is anti-Christian, especially the kind of Christianity that says there are definite rights and wrongs. Read more about the author and you will realize that.

I could not agree with you more. I am sick and tired of all the religion bashing going on right now. It seems like today anything goes and that is ok and religion is a waste of time. I frankly think that world could use some religion if not to teach right and wrong. I would rather be dead right then burning someplace by being wrong.

I don't think that anti religion should be pushed onto our children. Hollywood seems to not care about any sort of value structure anymore.

I don't care if it is the best movie ever made I will not support the theme plain and simple.

Completely agree. This book (and by extension, the movie) is intended as an attack on Christianity, or more broadly, the God of the Bible, and what's worse, it's aimed at children. It's a Trojan Horse whose purpose is to subvert our children and bias them against God. This is tolerance?

I always thought the trailers looked good, but the newer longer one has me really excited for this now.

Vantage Point is still the #1 movie I'm most looking forward to right now though.

The His Dark Materials series is some of the most intellectually challenging reading I've ever encountered, featuring some of the most profound thoughts on the relationship between humanity and the universe. It does feature a critique of the ways in which this relationship has been perverted by organized power structures, including religion, but its scope and achievements are larger than that.

I'm sorry if it offends anyone's creed, but open-minded readers and viewers, regardless of their denomination, will find more food for thought here than in any dozen random critical favorites.

And it's a brilliant adventure tale, to boot. The one title I'm looking forward to the most this holiday season.

What a coincidence that something like this comes during the Christmas season. Call it what you will this is nothing more than an attack on religion plain and simple. What a shame that much effort is put into something that has such a negative concept. The time frame of the release is just more proof to me that Hollywood is anti God which is a shame.

Let's see what the movie actually is like before we hurl such harsh words on it, shall we?

I consider myself Christian, and, again, I very much enjoyed Pullman's work. I would like the others to have the same freedom to make their own minds up.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

To be historically fair, they did start the purge of the Soviet Union, which killed millions more people.

I was going to take my seven year old daughter to see this when my wife told me about the anti-God undertones of this movie.

Here is a website that I found

http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/compass.asp

For all I care it can come out on Laser disc. I won't be watching or buying. More power to those that want to. I won't condem ya.

This guy might be a good writer, but I do not believe he can compare to Lewis and Tolkein (These guys were friends and Tolkein led lewis to Christ. I learned this in a C.S. Lewis documentary I watched)
