Default 200 GB Blu-Ray disks=1440p?

I'm starting to wonder if the purpose of TDK's 200 GB Blu-Ray disk is in order to fit a 1440p film on to it. I remember reading in a game magazine that the PS3 is the only Blu-Ray player that can achieve this with a firmware update. This is also the reason you don't find the gold logo reading "1080p FULL HD" on the PS3 itself or on the box because it is capable of more with the Cell's power that a standalone player doesn't have. I do believe that is the sole, secret purpose of the 200GB disk. TDK has been quiet about it since publicy stating the research for the disk fall of last year. The only thing they have mentioned is that they will be black instead of blue on the bottom since it will need a stronger surface. What do you guys think?

Well for starters, They say the TDK 200 GB discs will be for data storage only.
There is another company developing a 100 GB disc that could be used for video, but nothing is certain yet as they are still working on it. I don't think they will make changes to the current HD definition which is now the highest accepted standard. IMO there won't be a definition revision before the next generation of holographic discs 10 or 15 years in the future. To strengthen this point, why would they release movies in 1440p when not a single TV in the market can handle that much ...

SO out of nowhere we get two threads about 1440p within 24 hours?
Did some idiots blog somewhere spout 1440p as some new catch phrase or something?

I think 100 GB discs are "possible" for movies but 200GB I'd expect the failure rate would be too high the costs for the disc would discourage sales, and I don't think 1440p is going to be used for HD video playback...

Didn't you all get the memo about 1440p being a new industry standard? ExtremeHD anyone?

Yes, it's almost like it's a new form of FUD to try to cause confusion and deter people from buying into current HD formats. A new MS ploy, perhaps?
