Bracke said that at a panel discussion during the Highdef 2.0 conference.

i remember at one point on AVforums the FUDsters were saying that the plan was to drop dvd and replae with hddvd, now i can see a small amount of logic in that as it gives the choice, but its a risky game with hddvd combos and the reliability that goes with it (except for diehard hddvd fans, who never have problems with either xbob360s or hddvdcombos or tosh units)
whatever happened to the BD/DVD combo that was demonstrated, did it pass away peacefully? |

![]() LP = Longplayer, big flat plasticy thing with grooves, kind of like Laserdisk in size but analogue. Most LP owners had Hotel California and Pink Floyds' Wish you were here... it would actually be an interesting way of forcing the market.,, |

Here are my three simple suggestions to help encourage wider adoption.
1> Ensure that all hi-def releases have exclusive additional content (in HD!). 2> Offer more competitive pricing on discs. 3> Release the hi-def version 3 or 4 weeks prior to the regular DVD. Lee |

I would agree. Especially with releasing the HiDef ahead of the standard DVD. That would make for a big push for people who go to Wal-mart for midnight releases.

That would explain why he gave slightly higher marks to Harry Potter on HD-DVD (it had HD exclusive features, despite being lame ones mostly) over the Blu-ray, which actually had features in HD. :P Just because they're exclusive doesn't really make them better. I see his point, but I think he was full of crap giving a higher score to the HD-DVD when clearly the Blu-ray is the better option for anyone who doesn't want to force other people to watch the movie over the internet the way they do.

Exclusive releases to HD? Yes Exclusive features to HD? Yes Early release? No way Personally I still think the osmosis factor is going to drive HD adoption the most. In 3-5 years, all they're going to be selling in stores are Blu players. So when your Chinese piece of crap dies every 18 months, eventually you'll have to buy a Blu player, and with it, you'll buy Blu discs. Next Christmas when this crap is over, they can really start pushing it at the forefront of store displays and such |

This is nothing more than fantasy. There is not one studio today who would exclusively release a title to HD without a concurrent dvd release. The market is just not mature enough. The economics of the situation dictate this. The real threat to HD taking off is this silly format war being foisted upon us by Toshiba and Microsoft. The HD market would be very healthy right now if a certain inferior format wasn't confusing customers and hindering Blu-ray adoption rates.

to stop releasing in DVD would be a horrible idea...
there are a large number of people who just purchased their 1st DVD player in 2004/05 when the prices started dropping like crazy... to just cut off DVD would be marketing suicide... maybe only release new movies in DVD and cut off the catalog titles?...that can work so you can start cutting down on the shelf space for DVD and begin expanding on HD content.. |

Peter Bracke = Captain Obvious
Of course it has to happen, but now is FAR too soon. We're at least another 2 years from that point. What Mr. Bracke seems to forget is that HDTVs are only in some 30% of homes in North America. It's not like the VHS to DVD format change because here you're required to replace more than just the player in order to see any real benefits. |

You obviously didn't bother to read the rest of his plan that involves bands of hd dvd supporters breaking into people's homes, kicking in the screens on their sd 4:3 sets then driving them to Wal-mart with Star Trek phaser remotes pointed at their heads to buy hd Visio's on Bill Gates' Visa.

Why does everyone have to take an extreme and pretend that Peter didn't have balanced points to offer as well? Is this AVS?
He also said HDM could be released in advance of SD DVD, or offer additional bonus material to encourage adoption. That would influence the HD market... and the DVD would still be released. |

to offer special features only in high def is short changing DVD....the advantage to the high def version should be that the special features are in high def... but I personally, never even check the special features...so it's really not swaying me anyways...but it's a start... and no...this isn't AVS, if you think this place is anything like AVS...you're welcome to create an account there and stop bullshitting yourself...might as well go all the way.. |

The adolescent tenor of your post is exactly what I mean by AVS. All I want is a forum where members make an effort to sound professional and adult... Blu-ray.com, AVS, HTF or otherwise. That's clearly beyond the ability of most posters on any of these sites.
