Default Criterion going Blu-ray?

Stolen from DVDTalk:

-Posted on the Criterion Forum

Quote:
This may be in some other thread... The latest Sound & Vision magazine is covering their helping Criterion redo their new screening room, tied with their move to new facilities. The first article discussed the preliminaries, with article(s) due later to provide details about what is/will-be put in place. Interesting article, recommend checking it out.

Relevant snippet from it: "We've mastered in high-definition for years now. We just have to take the tapes and compress them in an HD codec. We did a Blu-Ray test of one of our titles, and we're really happy with the results."
Make of this what you will!

For a company that's always prided themselves on doing to the nicest transfers possible, they'd be fools not to!

Man...

Criterion has about 25 movies I'd trade my left arm for and another 35+ I'd trade a finger or two for.

I'll take:

all Wes Anderson movies
all Akira Kurasawa movies
all Kenji Mizoguchi movies
all Ingmar Bergman movies
all Hiroshi Inagaki movies
all Kihachi Okamoto movies
and then various others

I'd be so happy if Criterion went BR. Happier than if warner went BR exclusive, even.

This could make the wait a little shorter. Mine was shipped a few days ago; I'm really looking forward to watch this

Me too. I'd be happiest if both went BR, though.

That would be a major step in the right direction.

If Criterion goes Blu with their entire catalog, all hope will evaporate for HD DVD in terms of serious cinema.

I'm waiting for this

I pre-ordered that long ago -- mine actually just shipped yesterday.

Somehow I pre-ordered it when it was only £10.20 and shipping was only £3.08... so I think I lucked out on the pricing too! Right at $27 w/ shipping.

Ok I want Criterion to go blu of course, but let's not get carried away here.
Warner is the magic key here. Once Warner goes blu everyone will go blu!

Criterion going Blu-ray exclusive would be another huge blow to the HD DVD fanbase. I can think of quite a few HD DVD fanboys that would have to give in to the Blu side if this is true. It could be very interesting to see what Criterion would do with 50 GB.

Lucky dog Amazon.co.uk started to deduct the tax for Swiss customers, so I ended up paying 22.29 with shipping. Not bad, but 13.28 is a steal

My friend and I laughed out loud so hard at that movie; Everyone else in the theater was dead silent and two people got up and left. Oh, well. I would like to see this and Tenenbaums released.

DVD List By Spine Number.

I'd love to have the "Seven Samurai" on Blu! In addition, "Chasing Amy" and "Clerks" are the only Kevin Smith Jay & Silent Bob films that have not been released in HD (or at least announced). "Chasing Amy" is a Criterion release and "Clerks" is Miramax.

i believe he was saying he personally would be happy for criterion to go blu over warner because he is a criterion fan , no that criterion is a more important then warner.

I wouldn't get too worked up. Criterion's been pretty non-commital about going hi-def any time soon. But thought that tidbit rated a posting somewhere or other in cyberspace..

In this war, I will not believe anything until I see it in a "official" annoucement from the company top dog. Sorry, with all the rumors out there, I just am not going to get excited anymore.
