And basically trying to walk a thin line between "TL51!!!!" and "it ain't here, or happening"
HD DVD is now all: Wait for it. I have no problem if the zealots who refuse to buy into BD are forever waiting for what they need from HD DVD. It means a complete halt to HD DVD sales. One HD DVD fan had a great point: Look at it from the HD DVD owner point of view. How does a bunch of new players, and new functionality in the future help "us"? "We" need titles? Gary |

Yep:
BD: We have lots of great content. Lots more coming. The players are reasonably priced. And it isn't all about potential and the future. HD DVD: Just wait until the new players and the 50GB discs show up later this year!!! That new HD movie: Invasion of the Body Switchers. Gary |

The problem is that these people were not patient enough to wait for the advances that BD was going to make, so they bought into HD DVD, now they will have to learn to be patient, or buy into BD when Samsung & Co release their G2 players. |

If the 51Gb HD-DVD gets released. Do you guys think it'll play on the HD-DVD players that are out now?

It is completely misleading to suggest that manufacturers didn't support BD at CES this year, previously 'only' Samsung, Panasonic, Phillips, Sony and Pioneer were releasing players, but now you can add Hitachi and Sharp to that list. |

There is no way the A1/XA1 will support the higher capacity. A Toshiba engineer has already said this publically for the TL45. And it is highly doubtful that any of the current players can do it. And they are tight lipped about that. It's super desperation time in the HD DVD world. They are taking a MASSIVE gamble to try to sway Disney over one last time. Toshiba demonstrated reading from the discs on a modified drive. Modified how? At what speed? Gary Last edited by dialog_gvf; 01-13-2007 at 01:17 AM. |

AFAIK Toshiba has never demo'ed a TL disc, and they have never shown one to the public, most likely because it doesn't exist. |

First, the data must be readable. The PRML circuitry must be able to handle the distinct new configuration while maintaining the existing one. PRML is the KEY aspect that makes HD DVD possible. Toshiba's super-advanced PRML allows such high densities with the old tech. The data must be able to flow through the tuned computer that is the player. Suddenly you increase the peak data rate by 50% without any change in components?! At the very least, the clock speed of the decoder would presumably have to be higher than the spec requires to be able to manage the extra data flow. And that would impact cooling requirements and the fan speed. Make a hot and noisy player just in case you change the spec? Gary |
