And basically trying to walk a thin line between "TL51!!!!" and "it ain't here, or happening"

HD DVD is now all: Wait for it.

I have no problem if the zealots who refuse to buy into BD are forever waiting for what they need from HD DVD. It means a complete halt to HD DVD sales.

One HD DVD fan had a great point:

Look at it from the HD DVD owner point of view. How does a bunch of new players, and new functionality in the future help "us"? "We" need titles?

HD DVD will be 320GB on 14 layers and cost $99 by next month.

Let them keep it up. Encourage this nonsense. Who buys into that kind of uncertainty?

us when it came to DL BR discs

granted, there also was a major difference in that one was spec'd and had been demonstrated to really exist.

our only issue was yields at the time

Yep:

BD: We have lots of great content. Lots more coming. The players are reasonably priced. And it isn't all about potential and the future.

HD DVD: Just wait until the new players and the 50GB discs show up later this year!!!

That new HD movie: Invasion of the Body Switchers.

The difference is that everything that we were waiting for was inevitable, i.e. it was inevitable that BD50 yields would improve and they would install more BD50 lines. It was also inevitable that prices would go down, they always do, don't these people remember the G1 DVD players, I do, £879 was paid for it in my place, but now we have an upscaling model that does more and decodes all of the right codecs for less than half the price.

The problem is that these people were not patient enough to wait for the advances that BD was going to make, so they bought into HD DVD, now they will have to learn to be patient, or buy into BD when Samsung & Co release their G2 players.

If the 51Gb HD-DVD gets released. Do you guys think it'll play on the HD-DVD players that are out now?

That makes no sense to me, I think companies like Sharp showing their G1 player is more important than gaining the support of another manufacturer, especially if it is a no name Chinese one.

It is completely misleading to suggest that manufacturers didn't support BD at CES this year, previously 'only' Samsung, Panasonic, Phillips, Sony and Pioneer were releasing players, but now you can add Hitachi and Sharp to that list.

Well, there is more being dangled than just the 51GB. That is pretty useless without an increase in bandwidth (30GB *IS* enough if you're stuck at 30.54 max mux). Microsoft won't endorse it in the DVD Forum without the bandwidth increase. Guaranteed. And it is being done to lure Disney, and they would want to reuse the BD50 encodings -> Bandwidth.

There is no way the A1/XA1 will support the higher capacity. A Toshiba engineer has already said this publically for the TL45. And it is highly doubtful that any of the current players can do it. And they are tight lipped about that. It's super desperation time in the HD DVD world. They are taking a MASSIVE gamble to try to sway Disney over one last time.

Toshiba demonstrated reading from the discs on a modified drive. Modified how? At what speed?

An MS employee (bkilian I think) has said that the add on drive is a 2x drive so it will support the 1.5x speed, but he said that the division was unsure on whether they can get 17GB layers to read, or TL working without any problems.

AFAIK Toshiba has never demo'ed a TL disc, and they have never shown one to the public, most likely because it doesn't exist.

There is MUCH more to it than the drive speed. The A1's drive was 2x as well.

First, the data must be readable. The PRML circuitry must be able to handle the distinct new configuration while maintaining the existing one. PRML is the KEY aspect that makes HD DVD possible. Toshiba's super-advanced PRML allows such high densities with the old tech.

The data must be able to flow through the tuned computer that is the player. Suddenly you increase the peak data rate by 50% without any change in components?!

At the very least, the clock speed of the decoder would presumably have to be higher than the spec requires to be able to manage the extra data flow. And that would impact cooling requirements and the fan speed.

Make a hot and noisy player just in case you change the spec?

Gary
