Default LOST Season 3 Playback Issues

This is the second such thread I've had to start recently (the first being for another Disney release, Pirates 3).

I'm having a serious issue with all discs of the LOST Season 3 Blu-ray box set. None of them will play on my 60GB PS3.

Here's the weird bit...at first, they did.

We'll start with my PS3 at firmware version 2.01...

I began with disc 1 (obviously), using the Season Play feature...which does a lovely job of keeping track of your progress through the individual episodes. Finished disc 1 in a couple days, and moved on to disc 2. It gave me a bit of a hassle at first, but after a quick reset of the console (including shutting it off at the power supply, just in case), it worked fine. I watched the first two episodes of disc 2 that night.

I came home from work the next day, looking to enjoy at least one more episode. The disc wouldn't play.

More accurately, the disc played through the Buena Vista Home Ent. fanfare, and the copyright/commentary warnings. And then, it just stopped playing. Froze there for an eternity. I tried to exit playback mode. Still frozen for another couple of minutes. I turned off the system using the PS controller, and after giving me the error beeps, it shut itself down.

After several unsuccessful attempts with disc 2, I tried to go back to disc 1. Same story. Disc 3...no dice. Disc 4....5....6....well, you get the picture.

I figured it was part of the same problem that I was experiencing with Pirates, so knowing firmware 2.1 was coming, I waited.

Today, I downloaded and installed firmware 2.1 with no issues. You can probably guess what the first thing I did was...that's right, LOST disc 2 went straight into my BD drive.

That's when things got worse....

Now I no longer even get the Buena Vista fanfare. At least, not without some coaxing.

If I use the "Top Menu" button, those things play out. Then it gets past the copyright warnings...and freezes up again.

Now here's the really weird part. If, at this frozen juncture, I hit the Top Menu button again, the screen will flash this at me twice....

...and then go back to its original frozen state, from which I can repeat the process ad infinitum without ever reaching the menu.

For those of you astute enough to catch it, yes...that is in fact Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow with his face obscured by the FBI warning. I had disc 6 in, which has a preview for Pirates 3 on BD.

Anyone else having similar problems? Anyone who can offer a potential solution?

I just started playing LOST tonight on my 60gb PS3. After the 'introduction' on the first disc, the whole disc would freeze. I had to flip the switch on the back of the PS3 to reset it.

The 2nd time I started the disc, I pressed top menu to get through the ads and then I pressed top menu again when the introduction started. The java bar (I think that's what it is) started loading and everything was fine.

This is how it worked before and after the 2.10 update. I'm just finishing the 1st disc right now, so I'll add more if the other discs don't work.

Started the 2nd disc and no problems. I've seen the option for Season Play. I've never heard of this before and I'm not currently using it. This seems to be the only obvious difference.

How does Season Play work when your PS3 was actually reading the disc? I read the "About" on it but it still didn't really give a clear answer to how it bookmarks or saves your position.

Not entirely sure, but I imagine the bookmarks are saved to your PS3 hard drive. That's probably the reason for the BD Data folder now being on the XMB.

For the record, I formatted my hard drive after the first run of problems with LOST. Just in case. Didn't solve anything.

Why don't you call Sony's technical support staff they might be aware of some issues with it. Mine plays flawlessly on my Panasonic.

I am on the 2nd disc only but will see as I continue to watch the series if there is a problem with any of the other disc.

glenn22 - Yup. Just all 6 discs of LOST are giving me problems. I would've taken them back, but what are the odds of all 6 being screwed? How likely is that?

mystik - That's on the docket for later today. Just wanted to see if anyone else was experiencing this problem.

This sounds like the Pirates: AWE problems. What is Disney doing to their discs?? I was one of the people with 60GB PS3 problems with AWE so I guess when I get my Lost set that will screw up for me too. Great.

C'mon Disney. Their discs look the best but now these two high profile titles are screwing up?

I read somewhere (can't remember where, maybe Sony's support site?) that if you're trying to output a 1080p signal to a 1080i/max HDTV you might have issues with freezing and restarts. Not sure what you have though, so might not relate to you.

That's why I said call Sony's technical support staff. They might be aware of some issues.

Except I formatted my hard-drive, so that cookie shouldn't exist any more.

Besides which, shouldn't the cookie load after the menus? You still have to select Season Play from the menu before it loads your bookmark.

I would think it highly unlikely to be the discs if all 6 do the same thing.... It must be an incompatibility with the firmware that hasn't been fixed in the recent 2.1 version.

I also had problems starting up disc 3 of Lost. I had no problems watching discs 1 and 2, but I took each of those discs out of the PS3 between viewings. Then with disc 3, I left the disc in the PS3 overnight while Folding@home ran. So a good 20 hours went by before picking up where we left off in disc 3. When I went to play the disc, it went to the black screen with the pulsing silver dot in the top right corner. I couldn't get any response from the remote except for the PS button. When I tried to turn off the system with the PS button, nothing happened. I ended up having to hold the power button on the front of the PS3 for a few seconds to turn it off. After starting back up, disc 3 started up OK, but then when we started our episode, the audio went away. I backed out to the top menu which did have audio, and then we had no problems after that with discs 3 and 4.

So far, using Season Play has been fine for me (using a 60-gig PS3). Haven't made it to disc 3 yet though.

POTC 3 also worked fine for me (using a 60-gig PS3).

BTW, loved the intro where they show the standard def pic morphing into hi-def. I think all the blu-rays should include something like that. Edit: Also was nice to see someone other than Sony using custom icons for the blu-rays.

Nope, it loads your bookmark on disc load, it only uses it if you select it

Yes, the format should have done the trick. Perhaps you updated firmware (automatically) and that did something?

Good to know for future titles. I would've thought if it loaded on disc load, it'd simply start playing from where I left off without taking me to the menu. Thanks for the info.

No, I'd been working with 2.01 since the day of its release.

Firmware updated yesterday to include PiP 1.1. Unless you have automatic updates disabled, your system probably updated
