I live in the 7th largest city in the U.S. & there are no DLP theaters hear as far as I know, if there were I would go check that out for sure ( we do have IMAX ) but that does not change all the other crappy stuff about the movies. I still end up at the movies when a buddy has FREE special screening passes , you no a week or two before it is released DOES ANYBODY ELSE FEEL THE SAME HEAR??????????????

I usaually wait for the Blu-Ray. The resolution is noticably better, watching the movie in the theaters is like watching a DVD version.

There are, however, a few exceptions. When a movie has an amazing story that i can't wait to see (i.e., I am Legend.), i will fork over the $10-20 to watch it sooner. Usually, however, it's better to own the high def version than to watch it once in the theater for almost the same price.

I really do enjoy the theatre. I love my BD but there is something about a 60 ft screen that gets me at least once a week. My 56inch screen just cant compare. The quality is, needless to say, better on my TV but I love the acoustics in a theatre. Its a trip to me!

I become like the kid in the candy store with $10 in his wallet every time I go

Cinema is here to stay.

You guys never go out with your girlfriends or friends to catch a late night movie on a Friday or Saturday night?

To me it depends on the movie. Like Star Wars, LotR, or the new Batman coming out. I want to see it on the Big Screen. With big releases there's usually a midnight showing. I love going to those. The people are a lot different then when you wait 2 days later to go. You don't have cell phones going off, kids talking, people getting up to go to the bathroom every 5 minutes. Its more interactive and fun.

I rarely have the problems that everyone here complains about. When I see a print of a film, it usually is clean and in focus. The longer the run of the film, the more scratches I can see. As a former projectionist, if I see something wrong with the video or hear a problem with the audio I'm keen to jump on it. Fortunately, the last time that happened for me was at the local 'cheap' theatre with The Prestige playing. I could tell that the gate wasn't closed on the projector.

The audiences I'm around are generally quiet and attentive. Occasionally you hear an elderly couple in the back talking about what just happened. I haven't heard a cell phone ring in a theatre in forever. The kids seem alright too. This is in the Fargo area.

However, when I go visit my family in Missouri, I do experience the same problems that plague many people here.

Maybe it depends on what type of movie you go see. I rarely see comedies in theatres; I wholly avoid 'horror' movies and the only reason I ended up seeing Transformers is because someone paid for my ticket (at the 2nd run cinema no less).

Someone earlier mentioned seeing movies with a 'group of strangers' and this is truly a great part of cinema. To hear others gasp outloud at certain parts or to laugh in unison that brings a warmth to the room does add a dimension that you can't recreate at home. Of course, there are those who bring children to films that they don't belong in, there are people who unwrap candy (slurpee and popcorn do no add emotional weight to The Passion of the Christ).

And speaking of food, you have to understand that movie theatres usually only make 50% of their profit from tickets (they not only have to rent out the film, they also have to split ticket sales). Some films, like the last Star Wars, have an even more skewed ticket sharing towards the studio in opening weeks. Movie theatres have to sell food at high prices to earn a profit back. Now, there is a difference between making a decent return on investment and continually trying to meet or exceed shareholders expectations. However, I do not run a theatre so I cannot say how prices truly come about.

My local cinema has had about 4/5 different owners from Virgin to UGCA or what ever they are etc ... maybe thats the point... cinema's are struggling and maybe Blu Ray and home cinema is the future ... It would be interesting to know the difference in profit cinema vs DVD

Many years ago in England, before I emigrated to New Zealand (Middle Earth) I went to the movies once or twice a week. The seating was hard and uncomfortable in most cinemas, and there was very little room to stretch your legs. I usually lifted my knees and rested them on the seat in front, or if no-one was sitting there I would drape my legs over it. These were great times.

Back then they had double features, which was great value for money. Then the longer movies started to have an intermission, and we were told that because of the length of these new epic movies there wasn't time for a second feature.

This soon became the norm even with normal length movies, and we were finally robbed of our beloved double feature

So, since VHS arrived on the scene, I have kept upgrading my Home Theatre components, and now enjoy the ultimate Home Movie experience with Blu-ray.

Needless to say, I don't go to the movie theatres any more.

The admission plus food is now too expensive. I would rather spend the money on the latest Blu-ray release.

Cheers

I can see what people mean about the atmosphere in a cinema, however ... I love inviting mates over and getting a few beers in get the hot dogs & pop corn on and chill out and have a laugh ... everyone who's been round prefares the experience to the cinema and are blown away by the visual and surround of blu ray ... so far I converted everyone who has seen it ... A relative of my GF who was a die hard HD 360 fan... has just bought a PS3 and is now a Blu Ray supporter.

It's honestly not about where is it better to listen to or watch a movie, because obviously you can make your home theater more comfortable, I know mine is.

It's about balancing your life, getting air and doing what humans have been doing since Ancient Greek and Roman times, which is socializing, going to the theater, etc. Keeps your life more normal.

I agree though, that watching movies at home can be a blast, whether it's with friends or your girlfriend/boyfriend or your family, but it's good to go at the Cinema at least once every 3-6 months for a change of scenery. Plus their popcorn is much more tastier and even healthier because you dont intake those microwave popcorn fumes like you do at home.

Hmmmm...

Haven't you ever heard of taking a medium size cooking pot, covering the bottom of the pot with olive oil (deep enough to barely cover a kernel of corn), turning the stove to medium high, then covering the bottom of the pot with popcorn kernels, putting a lid over the pot, not closing it, but slightly off-center to let steam escape, then waiting 5 minutes while sliding the pot around to keep the seeds moving in the oil...when the kernels have popped, put the popcorn in a bowl... Then add melted butter, salt, even herbs etc. if you wish...

it's better than movie theatre popcorn
