Finally, I caught a lucky break (timing wise). Days after buying another device, I read the news (re: Warner, etc), and did some intense all night research into what might be the best overall Blu-ray player. Before digging in and reading, I would never have suspected it might be the PS3. But, throwing caution and $399 to the wind, I returned that other gadget and picked up a Playstation 3. I am blown away by all the bang that this box delivers for the buck! And, oh yeah, the movies look great on it too, which is what I was after from the start.
![]() I really feel pretty good about the decision, but it sure wouldn't hurt to hear from a few other folks who bought a PS3 primarily or excusively for use as a Blu-ray disc player. Happy? Regrets? Thanks! Mark |

Solid choice. Even if you don't play many games, the PS3 is future-proof as a Blu-ray player (very quick software updates) and is 1.1 and 2.0 compatible/ready.
If you are into games, however, the PS3 will not disappoint in any way. There are already quite a few awesome games for it, and the next few years look to be phenomenal as far as releases go. |

G'day, congrats and welcome to the Blu-volution geekboy2000.
I have a 60Gb PS3 and I think it's the best thing out there. I have never had any troubles, movies look and sound superb and of course the games are awesome. It is definitely a great investment. Again welcome and enjoy the Blu-volution. |

I'm definitely sure that the PS3 was my best electronics investment in 2007. I sure you get the point.

I also suggest getting your PS3 hooked up wirelessly. It makes it easier to stream music, photos and video from your home computer, get updates, etc. You must get hooked up, or you are missing out on a lot of features the PS3 has to offer. I got the PS3 mainly as a stand alone Blu-ray player, since I am not a big gamer; however, I have since become addicted to Warhawk. I think you'll be extremely pleased. Check through this forum, ask questions - there's a lot of helpful people here who will help you get the most out of your new machine. Chances are, you don't even know half the things it's capable of. Take it easy, |

Thanks to all who have responded! I feel really good about the purchase now! I'm sure you can all relate to how much I enjoyed the first few hours of exploring the PS3. Among the things I've done so far were to upgrade the firmware, setup WMP 11 to stream my audio and video across the network, and to install a few themes (OS X Leopard being my favorite so far). The only frustration for me so far in fact, has been that the audio/video streaming isn't (at least not yet) Mac friendly. But, hey, at least I've found a purpose for my Windows machine again: Feed media to the PS3!
![]() The disc load time is impressive to be sure, and as has been noted, it's nice to know that it'll keep pace with new features as they're delivered. In fact, I already pre-ordered "Saw IV", as I understand it may be the first disc with web content. I can't wait to see if the PS3 gets an update timed for the release. I'd also like to see the internet radio feature (I think PSP has it?), but yeah, there's a lot to explore! Thanks again to all! Mark |

Yeah, I originally bought a standalone player (Samsung-1400)...which does me well. Then for my birthday I got a 60g PS3. After having that for a while, I kind of wish I would've just gotten a PS3 from the beginning and saved myself 500 bucks. It really does do everything you need it to (and then some). I was just concerned about having my movie and game player in the same unit. Didn't want to wear out the drives from overuse.
So...now I've got an extra player. I'm gonna keep it though. Eventually it'll have a place in the bedroom...once I can raise the money to get a second HDTV. |

True Hi-Def games, Blu-Ray drive, media storage(music, pics, and video), free online game play, free internet access, and built in wi-fi....I'd say yes it was a wise choice. Welcome to team Blu/PS3. :-D

I picked up a 60GB PS3 just before Christmas of '06 and have loved every minute of it. It just offers so much!
I think that I would buy another PS3 if I wanted to get another Blu ray player for the house because even if I didn't use it right away for anything else, I know I'd always have the option for storage purposes or viewing pix or vids, games or just the fact that you have the connection for updates which most (all?) stand alones do not have |

You made a very good decision, I am very sure you will be happy with it. Here are some unbiased PROs & CONs strictly as a Blu player.
PRO 1) Very fast loading compared to other SA’s from either Blu or HD 2) LPCM is great! 3) Easy to firmware upgrade 4) Easy to “configure” CON 1) Bluetooth remote. I resolved this buy buying that little $9.99 kit that allows you to stick a USB to IR converter w/remote. I then used my universal remote to learn the functions of the remote that came with the USB to IR converter. 2) Does not Bitstream TrueHD or DTS-MA over HDMI (not a big deal with LPCM being fantastic! But I want my receiver lights to come on, you know the high def audio ones ![]() All in all I have been very hesitant replacing my PS3 as my primary Blu player because, well, my PS3 has been brilliant. |
