This is just a thought I've been having for a few days and I don't know how you guys might react to this. With all the rumors and announcements that have been out there lately, I have been reading different forums and posts I can't help, but to wonder why there are some people saying that "the studios have decided for the consumer and thanks for screwing us, HD-DVD was the consumer's choice because of PRICE, a hell to Sony and their proprietary format!" so in light of this correct me if I am wrong wasn't DVD a creating of Toshiba along with several other companies? now if I remember correct we got the first DVD player that was out in the market and at the time it was $600 and I could swear that prices of hardware were really high for a while, so I just can't understand why so many people are complaining that the studios have screwed them along with Sony. All they need to do is go back memory lane and they'll it wasn't that much different a few years ago this time around hardware prices dropped fast! Sorry guys it was just a thought.

i remember my dad bought a DVD player back in the day for $300.... which was loud and made an awful sound and was slow and looked weird.... but we loved it!
Now I buy dvd players for $20 so I can mod it to be region free. ![]() |

Yeah, I remember my first DVD player, it was over $800. I still have it (it's long since died), cause I can't bear to throw it out, it cost so damn much.
I just don't see how a 'True Hi-Def Enthusiast" can be so bent out of shape over a $100 price difference. Clearly the people making those statements are not what they are pretending to be. |

Yeah. The prices of DVDs in the beginning were not much different--and probably a bit more--than what we're paying now for Blu's. Plus, I don't recall that there were BOGOs. And new machines, regardless of the technology, are always expensive. Usually very expensive. I think prices of Blu-ray disks and machines have dropped faster than previous technologies ever did.

Yes, the first DVD players were upwards of $600, sometimes higher. The first VCR my dad ever bought was $400. VHS tapes during the mid 80s cost anywhere from $30 to $100.
So things are no different with Hi-Def - prices start high, and as the market continues to become more saturated with BD players, the prices will eventually go down. |

My family's first DVD Player was about $400 1-2yrs. later that same player was $150 at Wal-Mart, & My first player when I got my own place was $270(when Progressive Scan was the new thing) & that was the sale price niether mine or my parents originals still work, mine works sometimes but got annoying so I put it in the attic.
And too that note I remember working at Ames(remember them) when DVD's were new & The Matrix cost $34.99 & that was back when payroll's were alot less..LOL & My very first DVD was "Can't Hardly Wait" the Price $27.99 Last edited by DViper2399; 01-11-2008 at 07:18 PM. |

my first DVD player was $899 + tax. It's a Pioneer and is still being used in my bedroom. It had a dolby digital 5.1 decoder built in therefor it was quite pricey. Still runs like a dream tho. Sid and Nancy from the Criterion collection just came out and it was 70 bucks...i bought it.

I still have my first DVD player: A Pioneer 5.1 home theater system. Can't remember the model number, but I bought it in '98 and it cost $2500. Still runs great, and only had to have it repaired once (due to a disc getting stuck inside of it) for $100. A great system, it still powers my surround sound for my Blu-ray player...
[EDIT] Since we're talking about first DVD's as well: Starship Troopers. Fantastic picture and sound at the time! Last edited by SpikesBluBlooded; 01-11-2008 at 07:40 PM. |

I paid a cool $1,000 for my first Sony DVD player (it was also Sony's first player). My second DVD player was a Pioneer LD/DVD combo, which was also $1,000. I'm sick of hearing people whine about hardware pricing. EVERY new format starts out high... and the early adopters happily ay it. Toshiba dropped their prices so low they brought in a lot of "non-early adopter"-types who had no business buying into a format that may not succeed. Now it's their customers who are paying the price. These people need to start taking their anger out on Toshiba, though, not Sony. Sony didn't convince you to buy into a format with no hardware support and minimal studio support.

Ironically my first DVD player was a 700 dollar Toshiba while they were still in the test markets. I bought both Contact and Air Force One before I even had the player. I remember looking at the quality and going, "Holy smokes will you look at how great this looks".
I look at them now and go, "I can only imagine how good this'll look on blu". |

Never actually bought a normal DVD player. My first was the PS2, then bought a VCR/DVD combo from Phillips VCR part broke after 5 months (wanted $90 to repair it which is $10 cheaper than what it cost) so replaced it with a Samsung VCR/DVD combo and thats currently what I use. I will be getting a Sony 5 disc DVD player upconvert 1080i getting the 5 disc for CD use. Also about that time I will be getting a PS3 as my first BD player and might use that for DVD's if its better than the DVD player.

The first Sony player out was the S7000. I bought it for nearly a thousand within a week after DVD hit the market. I still have it and it works!

Yeah they suck usually.. but I can watch anything in the world now! That's better than nothing. You just have to enter a code into their players and viola! Region free! Check online (use google) to fine out what it is and which ones support it. |
