I paid a cool $1,000 for my first Sony DVD player (it was also Sony's first player). My second DVD player was a Pioneer LD/DVD combo, which was also $1,000. I'm sick of hearing people whine about hardware pricing. EVERY new format starts out high... and the early adopters happily ay it. Toshiba dropped their prices so low they brought in a lot of "non-early adopter"-types who had no business buying into a format that may not succeed. Now it's their customers who are paying the price. These people need to start taking their anger out on Toshiba, though, not Sony. Sony didn't convince you to buy into a format with no hardware support and minimal studio support.

Ironically my first DVD player was a 700 dollar Toshiba while they were still in the test markets. I bought both Contact and Air Force One before I even had the player. I remember looking at the quality and going, "Holy smokes will you look at how great this looks".

I look at them now and go, "I can only imagine how good this'll look on blu".

For a cheap Region free player... you got to go with Cyberhome.
Yeah they suck usually.. but I can watch anything in the world now! That's better than nothing.
You just have to enter a code into their players and viola! Region free!
Check online (use google) to fine out what it is and which ones support it.

My first DVD player was about $400 open boxed at Best Buy. I still use it in my bedroom today.
