OK, I did a newbie 'post in the wrong thread' type of thing, didn't I?

I'll head over to displays.

No your body will not explode. Your tissues (skin, heart, etc...) would expand because of the boiling fluids, but not explode.

You would not freeze instantly.
Because there is no air pressure to keep your blood and body fluids in a liquid state, the fluids would "boil." This would cause your body to lose heat energy rapidly, the fluids would freeze before they were evaporated totally. It would take from 30 seconds to 1 minute. So it is possible to travel between air locks with no suit.

My point exactly, I doubt anyone is going to live after their blood boils.

Actually, I think his point was that its theoretically possible (the opposite of your point).

Obviously, some things are going to be a little far-fetched - its a movie after all. Its called science fiction for a reason. I would not put this in the Event Horizon category as there is nothing supernatural.

The dialogue and tension in the movie was realistic, but from a sci-fi point of view, it was still just as unrealistic as others like Event Horizon.

Not unrealistic at all. Everything is possible. Just because it has not happened yet or the technology is not here - does not mean it's not possible. Where would we be if everyone said computers were not possible?

Lots of misinformation here. I will point you to this link...

Should clear some stuff up. You have up to 30 seconds (MAX) to get from A to B in space with no suite before you suffer any injury. After that time, your troubles will start to mount. Past the 60 second mark is where problems increase 100 fold.

Well I don't go believing everything I read on the internet either. If you do that then you might as well believe that HD-DVD is still going to win the format war.....

Nobody is saying that

There are many articles and links stating pretty much the same thing. Which goes against what you posted here.

Anyways - it was a good movie!

Exactly! It's a myth. There are even two optional commentary audio tracks included in the blu-ray disc and I actually listened to the commentary of the whole movie done by a real physicist, Dr.Cox, who was the scientific advisor of the film in an effort to make it as "real" as possible. In the commentary, Dr.Cox did point out several minor scientific errors that were nonetheless intentionally overlooked for storytelling's sake and for the sake of continuity, but none of them pointed out any scientific errors or impossibilities with the whole airlock thing and survivability in space without a suit. In fact, he said it was a common myth and that your body will not explode because the difference is only 1 ATM in pressure and because it is a vacuum, it takes a long time for the body to freeze since it will have to radiate heat out. He estimates that the unprotected (no space suit, but covered like in the movie) the human body can possibly survive in space for 20-30 seconds with only minor damage. He also adds that NASA has inadvertently proven this with two documented mishaps in our short history of leaving the atmosphere.

I beg to differ, a human body would not instantaneously freeze in space (a vacuum) or explode when exposed to space.
The rapid loss of pressure would be a fatal exposure if the person were not recompressed within a minute or so. I think it was a very plausible event. Showing the one guy rapidly freeze didn't seem realistic for me.

It is interesting what seems to depict reality and I assume the movie producer will take the perception of the public into account to make a movie that is entertaining yet doesn’t violate the code of plausibility. Space suits provide an environment of air, pressure and cooling for the astronaut.

However, the rapid loss of pressure would expel the air from their lungs and the loss of oxygen in the lungs would cause you to loose consciousness in a matter of seconds.

Additional fatal effect: http://www.sff.net/people/geoffrey.landis/vacuum.html

Space actually has little affect on short-term temperature.
There are 3 conditions for the temperature of things in the environment of space.
1) Those items heated by the radiation from a Sun (radiating mass).
2) Those items that are not (absence of radiated heat).
3) Those items that generate their own internal heat (human body, earth, item that generate and use electricity).

Since space has no medium to transfer heat by convection (it is a vacuum) it would be like living in a vacuum bottle where very little internal heat is lost.
In a vacuum the heat transfer mechanism is radiated heat only.

If you were to power-up an electronic device made to function in earth’s atmosphere it would burn up from the internally generated head (no convection cooling) in space and when you turn it off it would radiate heat until it is the same temp as the surrounding space (absolute zero); assuming the sun is not shining on it. I assume your body would feel hotter because there is no surrounding air to cool the skin and therefore your body

My point was that you could go form Point A to B without a space suit and survive, as long as it was within 30 sec. or so. Colbat has a better link than mine, but even mind said that you could survive for about 30 sec. or so.

Hi all,

Sunshine was a great SCIENCE-fiction movie, I loved the introspection of the characters, the Sun was beautifully done and Cillian Murphy is an exceptional actor. Sure the last part was a little weak, I would have preferred a more challenging ending as opposed the 'Hollywood' thriller type done.

I am not the film maker just a film watcher ... who thoroughly enjoyed this ride. Not much more can be asked for.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to a better sci-fi movie that they've seen made in the last while? This isn't an outright challenge, I was just trying to think of any "great" or 'near-great' sci-fi flicks of this nature myself and I'm drawing a blank. Anyone remember Supernova? Now that was bad.

this movie was not the best SciFi movie ever, but it was still EXCELLENT, warrants a purchase for anyone craving something out of the ordinary. Now that I have seen it (after spending $30 to buy it), I do not regret it one bit. Plus the audio quality is amazing. The movie gets 4/5 for PQ, its far from medicore, but it ain't no shoot'em up, Blade Runner, or Ratatoullie in quality.

The last Space Sci-fi movie that I thought was good (other than Sunshine) was Serenity.
