Thank for this answer Max, I have been trying to get a definitive answer for this question for several week on AVS. Could you also post this on AVS, either in the thread I started or as a response to my question in the insiders thread.

I think it's safe to say you can look to 10,000 B.C. as being the first "biggie" from Warner that will hit day and date with an encode that will not fit within HD DVD's specifications.

Should have a disc release sometime between June and August.

10,000 B.C. is going to be HUGE! Probably bigger then 300 (more mass appeal). Hopefully, by the time it comes out on Blu-Ray, HD DUD will be 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

That's OK. Most often it's a no win situation posting fact's on AVS. You have so many people who are so set in their opinions that they will never accept the truth. (They can't handle the truth. )

Was hoping the 3 week delay in the HD DVD release was due to WB actually doing a separate encode....

Since Max is participating in this thread...

For those who cared, Sweeney Todd doesn't have below black information, at least not from the print that I saw in the theaters. This means that the shadows/dark will not reveal anything if you pump up the brightness to see more detail. It's just not there. It also means that there will be nothing wrong with the transfer if you see lots of dark scenes, since they were meant to look like that.

One of the earliest FUDs about BD was that because it doesn't show below black video, it is inferior. The fact is, you're not supposed to see anything below black. If you do, your TV is not calibrated properly.

This is what I've been asking drmpeg to weigh in on but he seems to have vacated the forum. I had suspicions that things can look good at lower bit rates but it takes considerably more time. Having the extra head room that BR provides will allow journeyman to produce good looking films whereas HD DVD would require experts or above.

Yeah right, there are so many amateur encoders out there working on titles for "BR", they must be grateful for the extra bandwidth.

Unless you meant British Rail?

Not now, but when HD movies really take off there will be people being trained to do compression. Not everyone starts off as an expert. So having extra headroom provides more margin for inexperience.

I was asking more about bitrate than codecs. I wasn't sure if you meant they will continue using VC-1 so we won't see any highly detailed transfers because VC-1 doesn't benefit from higher bitrates.

My biggest problem with Warner is that I haven't seen any great looking titles from them. I thought The Departed looked good but there wasn't any "wow" factor like I've seen many times before on non-Warner releases.

I guess my question should have been if we will ever see any top tier releases from Warner once they are no longer burdened with HD DVD?

Shoot 'Em Up (New Line) looks very impressive. BD level bitrate.

Default High Bit rate Warner BLU-RAY movies might start showing up in June 2008 or later

Most likely as soon as June 2008 Warner might start using high bit rate MPEG-4/AVC and VC- 1 to take advantage of the 50GB space on the BLU-RAY discs. No longer does Warner need to limit the encoding to 30GB since Warner will be BLU-RAY excusive starting June 1st 2008. It will be excellent to see Warner movies encoded with higher bit rates when and if that occurs.

Do you have a link? I hope they do plan to take advantage of the space on BD's, isn't that part of why they are going exclusive anyway?

This post is a theory only. There is no link. It would be the most logical path for Warner. My original post I used the words might several times.
