Retailers adjust high-def space

Some seem to be adopting the right track, but stores like BB and in particular the online stores are still going to screw the consumers as much as possible it seems by not choosing to pick a side.

Very disappointed with that sort of attitude.

They are not doing anything official, but even before the new year every BBuy I in which I ventured (in Georgia and Indiana) They had around a 3:2 ratio of software, in BD's favor, and during the Holiday season I would say they had about 6-7:1 hardware ratio on the floor.

Remember, you can put official comments in one hand and feces in the other, see which one has more substance.

I hope so, but if uneducated people keep buying them, then they keep them in stock

Can you clarify whether you are just talking about the store your fiancé works at or the chain of stores.... if that makes sense

They are hope that Toshiba brings them down even further so they can be sold as upconverts. Trust me they will not be restocking them. They have to be politically correct but they don't want hd dvd players reordered.

So far it hasn't worked they're inventory of dud players has increased since the holidays while blu-players sell like hotcakes.

While the minor chain announcements are good, we need a MAJOR like Walmart, BBuy or CCity to openly state they are going pro blu for it to be a big hit.

Major chains are simply not going to do that, honestly I'm amazed that Trans-World took a side

The major chains will speak with actions, not press statements

The dominos keep falling left and right, forward and backwards. Can't stop it now. Whats cool about all of this is that last year we were making predictions much further out in 08 for the nail in the coffin to arrive. By summer 08... DUD players are virtually non existant. Better look on e-bay or some other auction venue. By Christmas 08.... very unlikely to even see any DUD disks for sale in the brick and morters at the rate consumers and retailers are preferencing BD and per the very high sales ratio. (at this time)

How low will HD DVD player prices go before the retailers will decide that they are not worth selling since there is no profit margin?

Even at the current prices, these players are not selling. I think Joe Q public is a bit smarter and more informed than anyone has given the credit for.

Some HD DUD loser posted this reply to the article about retailers adjusting HDM space.

This HI Def format war is far from being over. HD DVD has lowered their SAL player prices and now they are selling like crazy. The more HD DVD SAL players get sold, the better it is for the consumer. They are at a price for accelerated mass adoption. They are also the best SD DVD up-scalers. Warner Bros. Was paid $500+ Million by the Blu-Ray Disc Association to exclusively support Blu-Ray. This contract has a clause in it, so it’s not a permanent decision. If the BDA fail to deliver, Warner will seek out HD DVD and support them exclusively. And I suspect Blu-Ray will never embrace people due to its problems & incompatibilities. Price is the most important factor in anybody buying into this format war. This is where HD DVD can make a difference & an extremely strong come back. We all know that Blu-Ray has been piggybacking off the Playstation 3. Do we really want that young demographic deciding which format to buy & support? I would rather put my money on people that actually went and bought an HD DVD Stand Alone player. They knew what they wanted, but the PS3 crowd did not, Sony made the choice for them. At the end of the day the most important factor in this war is not how many discs each format has sold but how many Stand Alone Hi Def players are in the market place. This is the only way to succeed SD DVD and right now HD DVD is the only known Hi Def format to do this rather sooner than later. If Blu-Ray ever was to win this Hi Def format war, HDM as we know it is finished. Blu-Ray = Profile Plagued & Too Expensive. HD DVD = Finished specs from the start & priced for mass adoption. Which would you choose?

Are they blinded by Bluray news blinders? He is in his own world!

Uuuum. I don't even know how to respond to that! Everything he said was a lie or some fantasy pack of "facts" he pulled out of his.... imagination. Don't worry. The men with the white jackets should be showing up soon. Hope he dosn't hurt himself until then.

not only in US, but UK too. Twas 2 whole racks for BD and 1 for HD DVD. Now it extend to 3 racks for BD and 2 racks for HD DVD, but BD got additional place outside their rack, combined, it makes about 5 racks

Blu-ray.com is the FUD antidote.

It is fascinating to watch the death of HD DVD and see the red zealots try to imagine increasingly insane scenarios that would see the revival of their beloved piece of plastic.

The great thing is that this is only the beginning of the end. If you think some of the crap they're coming out with now is funny, just wait a few months. It's going to be absolutely hilarious!

The key statement in that story is as follows:

Quote:
Retailers including Best Buy, Amazon.com, DVDEmpire.com and electronics superstore Bjorn’s are all informing customers, either in-store or online, about Warner soon ending its release of new HD DVD titles...
That is a smart decision and will likely change the minds of most potential HD DVD consumers. A well-informed consumer is likely to take that money and invest it in a Blu-ray player instead. I am not sure what strategy Toshiba is implementing but you don't need an MBA to figure out that it will fail.

I agree wholeheartedly Wicky. Here are the statements in the article that caught my eye:

"But there is hope among some retailers that if they proactively push leader Blu-ray, they can spur the fledgling high-def business. To date, studios and retailers have blamed format war confusion for stopping consumers from adopting high-def."

“We are waiting to hear more about what [HD DVD] hardware manufacturers decide to do, but I think one thing we can all agree on as retailers, is that consumer confusion is leading to a delay in buying a format,” said Mark Higgins, Trans World VP of DVD, videogames and consumer electronics merchandising. “They don’t want to buy into another Betamax. As retailers, we need to simplify things for the consumers as much as we can with merchandising one format. We don’t want to be biased, but that is clearly the direction that high-def production looks to be going.”

The retailers could have the biggest impact on ending things once and for all simply by refusing to restock anything HD-DVD and making it a special order niche product.

The best way for them to increase sales of HD players and media is to eliminate consumer confusion by going with the market trend and backing Blu exclusively.
