Default How long should I wait ?

Hi everyone I was shopping yesterday For My First Home Theater System .
And of course I was told to purchase Blu Ray seeing they have one the format war . But here's what I noticed .
Every Blu Ray player Starts at Around 400$ vs a HD DVD player that you could easily pick up at around 200$
I wanted to buy Nacho Libre the movie for my Kids again the Blu Ray Disc was 32.99$ vs the Hd Dvd version at 23.99$ and the cheapest Blu Ray Disc
I saw was priced at 26.99$
Seeing that Sony has won the Format war How long should I wait for Sony to bring down their prices ? Do you think by spring time we'll have Blu Ray players at 200$ .
Or do you think Sony is just going to Milk the prophits seeing there's no competition ?

Thanks
Again

Hard to say, we don't know your financial standings .

Nacho Libre is a very odd example as a sidenote. Paramount stopped releasing Blu-Ray discs sometime last year [for various reasons, both public and actual, that really isn't pointed to get into here ], so their titles typically aren't benefiting from the sales and promotions the studios have been running, and well, retailers can ask a higher premium for them since they're not getting restocked [at the distributor level] currently. The MSRP for both the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD version of Nacho Libre are actually the same, so for that title, it's really up to the retailers. They can explain better why they're pricing their HD-DVD software so much cheaper than their Blu-Ray counterparts [Can give you a hint though, the retailers don't want to reorder the HD-DVD titles].

With Blu-Ray player prices, I really can't say, however, currently, you should be able to get good 1080p bd players at the 300$ or so price point, where you looking at best buy or circuit city type stores though? All the same I do recommend waiting for a BonusView enabled player [they really shouldn't cost more than their counterparts either, but they won't be out till later this year].

As a sidenote, Sony only controls the price of SPHE titles, nothing else. It's not anymore Sony's format than DVD was Sony's format.

Prices will come down, it's inevitable. With the 'war' between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD coming to a close, price becomes even more important if the parties involved want to actually supplant DVD [which, was kind of the whole point of the new format, to revitalize that market].

Sony is not milking anyone, they actually lose money for each PS3 sold (they lost 350+ $ for each 60Gb when they were sold 600$, but they reduced costs, maybe they lose 50$ now).
As long as there will still be two formats, the production factories will be few and you have to wait for the production factories to be everywhere for the production costs to be lower. HD DVD used a process similar to DVD, that's why they cost less (movies) and are inferior, the low cost players is a last weapon, and they lose huge amounts of money for selling them at this price.

By the middle of this year there will be cheaper players out there with more features, and the older players will come down in price.

If you have kids though, consider getting a 40GB ps3. It can play games, act as a media hub for any movies, songs, and pictures you have stored on your computer (streaming over network), and mosy importantly, it is a stellar blu-ray player that will support all the blu-ray features that will come out and is very quick with response time loading discs. It's $399 right now, but if you wait a bit I'm sure you can find a deal on it eventually.

As for the software- visit the section on this forum called "Hot Deals." There you will find the best prices for discs and any sales listed. When there aren't any sales going on, usually amazon has the best prices ($15 to $25 for movies).

Hope that helps.

I don't want to sound like a jerk but it seems to me that you are just spreading some hd fud. Sure prices will come down in the future and the cost of movies will too but for now if you want to enjoy great pq and sq you'll have to fork over some dough. There are many early adopters here that gladly spent over a thousand dollars for a blu ray player when introduced and many who payed full msrp for the first 60gig ps3. My point is it going to cost you money don't expect to pay less than 200 dollars for at least a year.

Blu-ray films are not expensive at all, just check out Amazon.com. All Blu-ray films are at least 30% off on Amazon. By the way, I recommend Samsung BD-P1400, not Sony players, unless you want the PS3.

Bottom line you get what you pay for if you want cheap go buy a fud player and enjoy the poor picture and sound and the support of TWO studios or go blu and enjoy the best sound and picture its up to you

I've never really understood the price argument put out by the red camp (not that the OP is doing that). In order to get into HD, you need to spend a significant amount on a TV, likely a decent surround system, so how does paying an extra couple of hundred for a high quality Blu player, the heart of the content of a system, be a factor?

I paid $1500 for my TV. I paid $500 for my receiver and $1200 for my 5.1 speakers (will buy an additional 2 for 7.1 at some point). So that's well over $3000 BEFORE taxes, and somehow, the extra $200 for a hi-def disc player that won't be obsolete by end of year should be the deciding factor?

I think if anyone's budget is that tight, perhaps there are better things to be spending money on than a home theatre system.

People seem to have this misconception that high definition media is some kind of right that all people have.
Not to be mean about it, but it is not and they don't.
If you can afford it, get in and enjoy it and if you can't then sit back and wait.
I am just tired of people who continually act like someone owes them something, that Sony and other companies owe them something.

good things come to those who wait. new 2.0 and 1.1 players will be hitting the market soon, sround spring/summer. when those players hit, the ones out now, theyre prices will drop. or you can go for the p23 for $299- sonystle has the $100 off if you sign up for their credit card. but i dont know if theyre still doing that deal.

Hence the title question of the thread: "How long should I wait?"

I'm curious too and would like to say upfront that BDA owes me nothing. Conversely, I owe them nothing. I just would like to know how long I need to wait for standalone prices to go below $200.

P.S. I'm willing to wait as long as it takes, but I'm curious what the prevailing wisdom of this forum thinks.

For a 1.1 or 2.0 I will say that you will honestly be waiting until Q3 08 unless the chinese player hits in the summer.

None of us [well that we know of] are on the marketing side of engine.

None of us can give a good qualified answer to that question. There are suspicions etc, but really, there's different factors at play that are hard to pin down.

'As long as it takes' is prolly the most reasonable answer.

Here's a fun question that I feel is related .

What does it matter [now] how long it's projected to take?

Just buy a PS3. You will have a great Blu-ray player, and before you know it, your kids will forget about Nacho Libre once they have the best gaming console out in the market.

It doesn't really matter to me, but I would prefer to start watching Blu-ray movies before the end of the year rather than wait another 3 years

Another related statement - I think how long it takes really should matter to BDA. If they take too long then they're delaying mass adoption (i.e. the really big money). Worse, there's always the outside chance that some dark horse will come in and swipe their lunch.

The later is more my opinion as well.

But I mean, for the first bit, let's consider a few hypothetical [AND NOT TRUE In Any Way :P] scenarios/answers :

"It'll come down to 200$ in 3 monthes."
versus
"It'll come down to 200$ in 6 monthes."
and
"It'll come down to 200$ in 3 years."

With both scenarios, if you're waiting for the 200$ price point, it's when it reachs the 200$ price point that you'll be willing to invest, neh?

Now I can understand when it gets 'close' and you start to be more amiable and open to spending a little more money to get it now, instead of waiting for the next brand refresh to drop prices 20 to 50$. Or if the 'promise' of price drops not happening "Anytime Soon", you may become resigned to the cost.

I'm just really curious as to why it matters, now personal curiosity is a fine and dandy thing, and it's a valid answer on its own . I see some merit now that I've thought through some scenarios [and well, quite possibly posted a strawman unintentionally, sorry ].

My advice in general is just to be cautious if you're concerned, better to not regret a purchase.
