Hi everyone,
![]() I am going to go and buy a new LCD in the upcoming month and I just wanted some feedback from a few informed consumers. I wanted to go for a 52" LCD because anything else is just way to high priced. I wouldn't mind a Sony SXRD, but i heard they are not that good....anyway back on topic...I think I have narrowed it down to 2 different models. They are; The sony KDL52XBR4 or The samsung LNT5271 I am just wondering what everyone else thinks...I will take positives and negatives...I just want to make an informed decision. Thanks for all your help. ![]() |

Just bought the LNT5271F last night, I went to Circuit City and compared a XBR4 and the 71 series side by side. The Sammy looked better to be. They had Spiderman 3 playing at 24hz and the Blacks were better, and just looked overall cleaner. The only thing I perfered on the Sony was the anti-glare screen.

So, for the reflective screen, how bad is it?
I will have it in a room not too close to windows and shouldn't have any direct sunlight, or does it just reflect everything? Thanks for responding so quick, and thanks for your help. ![]() |

If you dont have any windows I wouldnt worry about it. But I had to open my blinds to get the light for the picture above (camera phone), and you can see the glare from the window in the pic. ![]() I leave my blinds closed most of the time, and all day today ive been watching blu-rays on my new baby ![]() ![]() |

Glare isn't as bad as many make it out to be. Unless you have bright lights shining directly on it, there are no problems. My 4671 is next to a huge west facing patio door and the blinds are open almost all day with no glare. And when the TV is off, it looks like a big piece of black hard candy. Beautiful addition to any living space, IMO. I do like the Sony's bezel, but when I compared the sets side by side in store it's Samsung hands down. There are guys and online sources that will try to convince you the XBR4 has "better PQ," but any difference is absolutely neglible. I'll tell you what I told the other 100 people on here asking the same question: go to the store, stare at both sets, and determine which is right for your individual taste, setup, and pocketbook. Both are the best LCDs on the market.

This is how it goes. The 2 leaders in lcd technology are Samsung & Sharp. Sony's are assembled by Samsung, because Sony has other endevors such as oled which is what Sony is focusing on in display technology. Samsung loves to invent. They always have the new, new one, but they don't always work out all the bugs. Sony's & Sharps use proven technology, old & bleeding edge alike. Sharps 52d82u and the 93u are 120hz technology tv's, but here's the catch, they were using 120 hz technology for a year before Samsung or Sony. Now that I have confused you even more, in my opinion, any of those 3 tv's are good tv's My favorite is Sharp, Sony then Samsung. Samsungs seem to have more issues with them

You can't judge pic quaility at Circuity City or Worst Buy by comparing pics on the sales floor. You have to remember that none of those sets are calibrated. Also, the pic quaility (signal) at most of those places is farily bad anyway and does not really deomonstrate a tv's true performance. I currently have a Sammy and love it, but prefer Sony and expect to go back to Sony when I "need" my next tv. Btw, don't Sony and Samsung jointly develop some of their tv components? |

http://www.news.com/Sony,-Samsung-co...3-5271407.html I realize neither were calibrated sets on display at curcuit city, but I have owned LCD tvs before, and I was mainly looking for motion blur issues and black levels. They did let be play with the picture settings a little (after they found the right remotes). Both looked outstanding, but I think Samsung has the advantage on producing darker blacks. I prefer Samsung for it has much better black than Sony. Both sets are great however. Can't go wrong with either set.
BTW, at the end of analog era, Sony found itself in deep s**t because it didn't invest in digital technology (They wanted Trinitron age to last forever.) Other players, most notably Samsung, realized that it couldn't compete with Trinitron and heavily invested in then 'the future' technology such as Plasma and LCD. This almost destroyed Sony's TV sector at the beginning of digital era.. Sony then realized that they needed to do something real fast. What sony did was to approach Samsung and offered them a ton of cash for Samsung's LCD technology. This was the birth of S-LCD joint venture of Samsung and Sony!! S-LCD is dedicated LCD fab located right next to Samsung's own LCD fab cluster not far from Seoul. S-LCD is owned 50% plus 1 share by samsung and 50% minus 1 share by Sony. It's CEO is Samsung guy while it's VP is a Sony guy. However all aspects of actual fab operation is done by Koreans. S-LCD is now considered a win-win situation for both company. All Sony's Bravia LCD panels come from S-LCD. Sony then applies it's own 'TV-circuitry' to created the Sony feel. Interesting thing is that S-LCD was heavily resented by Japanese general public. It hurt their pride to see their flagship company to go to Samsung (a Korean company too!!!) for help... By the way, all Samsung's fabs are run very effectively... they work like 25 hours a day!! Another interesting fact: Real funny~~ It was actually Toshiba that literally taught Samsung during 60s and 70s how to make transistors and black and white TVs... Samsung's founder had a personal contact with then Toshiba's CEO and asked for help. Toshiba sent their engineers to Samsung to 'educate' them! It's funny to see how times have changed and where they are now in terms of semiconductor and CE industry.. Last edited by halmo20; 01-22-2008 at 04:40 AM. |

![]() It is greatly appreciated ![]() So...what about this calibration stuff? how do you calibrate a TV? I have a 32" samsung and has it been calibrated? Hmmm...So much to think about...I never knew that Sharp's are on the same levels as Samsung or Sony...Which Sharp is the best or equivalent to these TV's? |

As for the reflective screen, it's not that much of a problem in the showroom; but it's reflective enough that I know it will be a problem when I take it home. It's really dependent on how the lighting setup is in your room. I know I have the worse possible set-up, with a window in the back and two lights within viewing angle opposite... but still, it's something that shouldn't be discounted. |
