I just bought Blade Runner and watched it and was surprised to see some minor pixelation when whites appear. The thing is, I had the standard edition of Blade Runner and when I upscaled it to 1080p there was pixelation at the same spot too! How can this be? I thought there were no compression issues with these high-def discs. Even the pro reviews have given the picture five out of five--so it has to be that my LCD isn't set up properly, right? (I use a Sony Bravia KLV-32300A & my player is a ps3).
Can anyone give me some tips to set up my TV properly? |

It is possible on Blu-ray but not probable. I can't tell you if what you're seeing is the movie, the player, or the display's fault. Get a disc with calibration signals on it(various THX discs, hidden patterns on all Sony titles, etc) and go from there.

I just took my Blade Runner BD to a store which has a ps3 hooked up through HDMI to a 42inch LCD and it looked fine there. No problems at all. I watched the same scene where there was pixelation my TV on theirs and there was no sign of it at all. So I know there's nothing wrong with my ps3 or the BD.
But the funny thing is that when I set my TV to the 'Vivid' mode, the pixelation is gone. But I don't want to use it in that mode for obvious reasons--it looks unnatural etc. But when I switch to 'Standard' or 'Custom' the pixelation appears. By the way, how do I get to the servce menu of this brand? (Sony Bravia KLV32U300A) I tried the code for all Sony Bravia's which is display, 5, vol+ but it doesn't work. |

Have you tried turning down the white level of the picture? Maybe you have whites so high on the LCD panel they're blowing up (for example, 90% and over values being hard clipped at 100% of the panel) and you may be seeing these highlights actually being "posterised" instead of "pixelated"?

Well, the funny thing is that when I set the TV to the pre-set 'vivid' mode the pixelation goes away. Each time I switch to the 'standard' & 'custom' settings the pixelation appears again.
My custom settings are: Picture: 80 Brightness: 50 Color: 50 Hue: 0 Color Temperature: Neutral Noise Reduction: On Cinemotion: Auto The vivid settings are: Picture: Max (100, that is) Brightness: 50 Color: 60 Hue: 0 Color Temperature: Cool Noise Reduction: On Cinemotion: Auto I see most people talking about something called 'back light' when they mention their settings, but my TV doesn't seem to have any setting like that. Is it in the service menu? |

Well, I went to my local Sony showroom & played my BD's (Blade Runner & POTC3) on their set (they used a ps3 for blu too), and guess what: the problem came up there too! But only on the U series, mind you. So it definitely isn't my HDMI cable. They had a 32 Sony Bravia U series (like mine) & and a 32 Sony Bravia V series (which had more color depth) placed side by side and while the problem was there on the U series it was NOT there on the V series.
![]() They tried to convince me that it was some fault of the BD's, but come on, Blade Runner & POTC: At World's End are considered demo worthy material if not reviewed by the pro's as first class transfers. They told me the only solution was to watch the films in 'vivid' mode ![]() Oh, and a funny thing: I live in Sri Lanka (a run-down third world country) and I talked to them if they had standalone BD or HD DVD players and while they knew what Blu-ray was, there had no idea what was HD DVD ![]() |

Exactly, honestly with digital connections it's either all or none so if it was a bad cable, you wouldn't get a thing.

Yeah, as I said there can't be anything wrong with the cable because the TV's in my local Sony showroom had the same problem in the same spots on the BD. But the Sony Bravia V series did not have it, the U series all has the same problem.
I wish their were any pro calibrators here, but we don't have them in this country. ![]() |
