Default Blu-Ray Helps Push PS3 Ahead Of X-360 in Europe

PS3 to outsell 360 in Europe by summertime

Phil Elliott 12:16 (BST) 25/01/2008

Reeves reveals 1 million consoles were sold in PAL regions in December

Sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 are on course to overtake Microsoft's Xbox 360 in Europe by the summer of this year, according to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's president and CEO David Reeves.

According to Reeves the console is already outselling its rival in France, Spain, Germany and Italy, and over 1 million units were sold across the continent in the December build-up to Christmas last year.

On top of that, the latest numbers show Sony with a three-to-one advantage over the 360 in sales last week.

Reeves, talking to MCV, also explained that around a fifth of that number was down to the UK alone: "We're very happy with the performance of PS3 in the UK," he said.

He added that his company's console now had a higher cumulative installed base in some regions.

"It has not yet reached that in the UK. But the team here expect to overtake the installed base of Xbox 360 across all PAL territories in late summer.

"It's also worth mentioning that last week we outsold Xbox 360 in PAL territories by a ratio of three-to-one."

Momentum seems to be building for Sony's flagship console following a torrid time last year, as the effects of the price cut and increasing popularity of Blu-ray continue to kick in.

Microsoft will try to spin this by saying that they still lead in North America.

I wish I could find the report by that one analyst that stated that PS3 would beat out both the Wii and the 360 by the end of this generation of consoles because Blu-Ray would win the war and that would help out PS3 sales.

Of course at the time HD-DVD... er... I mean 360 fans {because most of them are interchangeable} tried to bash it and yet that's exactly what's happening.

Gotta love the irony. The popularity of Blu-ray is boosting sales of the PS3!

Wasn't it supposed to happen the other way round?

Me either, but, way I figure it, they'll all have to come over here eventually seeing as how Blu-Ray won the war and all *LOL*

It's Deadmeat, if people don't take his name as Ironic I don't know what would do it?

Isn't the Xbox an American product? Probably alot of Americans prefer to support their own industry.

It was. I've always made the point that the relationship between PS3 and blu would be reciprocal. anyone who cares at all about HD movies AND gaming has NO other choice than PS3.

Well, I don't own one, but I'm willing to bet a nice bottle of wine that even the 360 is not made in the USA. (a wild guess would be China? )

I don't think that has anything to do with it really. FPS are just the dominant game style here and 360 had a lot of good ones. it also has Live getting folks addicted to online play. Once the install base is sizable then a lot of people follow their friends and have to get the 360. The fact that the PS3 has weathered that storm and is accelerating faster than 360 shows a positive trend.

50 mil ps2 owners would beg to differ with you.

Right now Sony has lost the Midwest, you can't carry America without it and you can't carry the Midwest without football. Ergo the first thing they need is an excellent Madden, then they need to redouble and triple there efforts here.

Of course the PS3 is going to sell, its a great Blu-Ray player. From a gaming perspective the XBox 360 smacks the PS3 back and forth across the good 'ole U.S. of A.

I make that point as well and usually catch heat for it. It's overpriced for what it is... a PS2 quality system with a unique controller.

it's interchangable. same with the ps2. the ps3 boosted blu-ray sales causing blu-ray to dominate over hddud. Now that dud is pretty much out of the pic and blu is being pronounced the winner, we see ps3 sales increasing. It's a love-love situation.

Also, the ps3 is a much better gaming system than the 360, and that will be proven this year.

Actually it doesn't and recent weekly sales bear that out. Most games are on both consoles and are usually rated almost exactly the same. There are more PS3 exclusives coming this year than 360 exclusives. You are basing your opinion on past catalog and old titles do not move consoles. The tide is rapidly turning.
