Default The Brave One (Warner's smoothie PQ strikes again!)

I watched The Brave One on Blu-ray yesterday (after having it laying around for a week) and must say I was a bit dissapointed by the PQ. I think large parts of it the PQ felt a bit too soft for my taste. The bitrate peaked at around 20 Mbps.. Why can't warner step up and give us higher bitrate now that they dropped HD DVD?

Anyone else seen The Brave One on Blu yet?

I haven't yet...I was going to buy this...I will rent it now. I agree with you thinking WB should encode their movies with higher bitrates now. The fact is technically they still support HD until the end of June. So I guess we will still get the same WB transfers as we always have untill then. New Line Cinema however is releasing its movies in VC-1 at the higher Blu-ray specific bitrates. Both Rush Hour 3 and Shoot'em Up had great PQ. I will expect the same once WB officially produces no more HD-DUDs.

I fully agree the PQ on Rush Hour 3 and Shoot Em Up was kick ass. I expect the same from Warner in June. People were raving about the PQ in The Invasion, but I had a lot of grain (maybe it was just my copy).

Okay now can I get a straight answer here...Blu-ray fanboy stuff aside seriously. Are WB Blu-ray's PQ really getting held back by having to release them on HD DVD too?

aahhh YES! 25 gig movie or 50 gig movie which do you think has better PQ

a HD-dvd movie will only maybe peak at 30 mb/s Blu I've seen as hish as 40 mb/s

Well thats the thing. Do you think WB would have actually used a 50GB Blu-ray for The Brave One? I guess we will see in the coming months whether WB steps things up. Because isn't it safe to say that they are just going to port over movies such as The Matrix, Batman Begins, etc.?

I hate to tell you this but...
The bitrate on Warner titles is not the biggest problem, the pre-filtering is.
Even with high bitrates their transfers would be soft, because of the filtering that is applied beforehand.

And they will probably continue this malpractice until the grain-haters shut up!

Over in the insider threads there was mention that at least Batman Begins was going to get a fresh new encode for the bluray release. We will have to wait and see what WB tells us. However, in the Bill Hunt insider thread he mentions that WB will be making an announcement next week bout titles coming. Not sure what it will be but he says keep an eye out on this site and The Bits to hear about it. I am excited for early next week.

May be the reason is VC-1, for older movie, VC-1 can do their job, but
new movie, if it was shoot in high def but turn out being more compressed,
than the PQ will getting worse, for older movie, when they used VC-1 to
remaster the original source, than it looks great because the original source
was bad. For the new movie, the source expected no compression. but they
used VC-1, then it is no good for the source.

Sometimes the AVC looks great, because its good for the new movie, for
old movie, it can't make a really big difference. Therefore, I think, VC-1 is
good for old movie, AVC is good for new movie.

It is just a big MAY BE for the above ideas.
