To me you should quantify what you could do with that extra money .. and then decide if it's more important than the enjoyment you will get from any screen quality differences you are currently debating. |

I think it's really simple: the best costs money, and lots of it. The Pioneers command a premium price because they are (arguably) the best. Is the better quality worth the difference in cost to everyone? Nope, but that's what competition is all about.
Like Lexicon and Anthem who sell multi-kilo buck surround sound processors (NOT receivers!), Pioneer is catering to the market segment that wants the best and price is a secondary issue. That segment is (almost by definition) much smaller than what the average consumer wants/will put up with, but it is still a valid market. (Just ask Ferrari who sell orders of magnitude fewer cars than Ford/GM/Toyota/etc.) AS I've said before, I'm one of those people who wants the best--and if can't afford the best, I'll get the best I can afford. So that means that I'm saving up for 60" (65" - 70" would be better if they made one!) Pioneer Kuro, perhaps the Pioneer Elite one, to tide me over until the breathtakingly good extreme contrast Kuros hit the street in a couple of years. |

I bought it just before xmas. If you go to a local dealer, not a big box store and get a good price quote. Magnolia/BB will honor that price. I went to my local ABT here in chicago and they agreed to sell me the monitor for $3600 after some negotiating. I got it in writing and took it to magnolia, because honestly, I wanted the rewards points from them. I was going to pay tax at either place and the price was the same, so why not get $160 in rewards for it. Ended up taking the price of the monitor below $3500 after I sold the certificates.
Anyways, last night I reassured myself of my purchase when I popped in 2001 in my Panny BD player. If you have watched the movie and want to see the Kuro at its best, watch that movie on BD. The blackness of space and depth in the picture are just incredible, totally different from my friends XBR4. His picture is good, but does not stack up to the Kuro in those aspects. |

They are overpriced. My 700U Panasonics are the next best thing for thousands less. |

It's just implying that while their older (or rather, current) ones are great, their future sets will absolutely blow the competitions out the water when it comes to blacks.

I'll probably contribute to their bottom line when the next-gen sets hit the market by giving my 5010 to my folks and picking up a pair of bigger sets for my sister and myself. The 5010 is killer but I can hardly wait for the next one! ![]() |

The Pioneers ARE the best. Also, I came in close 2nd getting a panasonic plasma. You'll be happy to know I switched from LCD. They have the best picture and it's easy to see the difference. Altho LCD and plasma may soon both be dead come OLED or something else.
They are not overly expensive... even the best of the best LCD's are expensive... such as the samsung LED backlit TV's. The latest Sound and Vision magazine put the pioneer plasma against samsung's LED LCD TV. The plasma won for picture quality in the cover article Plasma vs LCD. I even am happier with my panasonic PZ750U rather than a samsung LED backlit LCD. The color reproduction is that much better... plus faster action... and 100,000 Hr panel. Wow... my TV will be replaced long before then anyways. Plasma is best. I never thought I'd saythat since for the last 10 years I was an LCD junkie My videophile friends are all getting plasma. Plasma's are for those who know better and are searching for picture quality/accuracy. JL |
