Gary
Well I had a similar debate with the 52" XBR4 vs another SXRD (2020) for our 2nd t.v. The SXRD won out because for the $2000 difference we were also able to get 2 more PS3's plus a crapload of movies and games etc.

To me you should quantify what you could do with that extra money .. and then decide if it's more important than the enjoyment you will get from any screen quality differences you are currently debating.

I think it's really simple: the best costs money, and lots of it. The Pioneers command a premium price because they are (arguably) the best. Is the better quality worth the difference in cost to everyone? Nope, but that's what competition is all about.

Like Lexicon and Anthem who sell multi-kilo buck surround sound processors (NOT receivers!), Pioneer is catering to the market segment that wants the best and price is a secondary issue. That segment is (almost by definition) much smaller than what the average consumer wants/will put up with, but it is still a valid market. (Just ask Ferrari who sell orders of magnitude fewer cars than Ford/GM/Toyota/etc.)

AS I've said before, I'm one of those people who wants the best--and if can't afford the best, I'll get the best I can afford. So that means that I'm saving up for 60" (65" - 70" would be better if they made one!) Pioneer Kuro, perhaps the Pioneer Elite one, to tide me over until the breathtakingly good extreme contrast Kuros hit the street in a couple of years.

I bought it just before xmas. If you go to a local dealer, not a big box store and get a good price quote. Magnolia/BB will honor that price. I went to my local ABT here in chicago and they agreed to sell me the monitor for $3600 after some negotiating. I got it in writing and took it to magnolia, because honestly, I wanted the rewards points from them. I was going to pay tax at either place and the price was the same, so why not get $160 in rewards for it. Ended up taking the price of the monitor below $3500 after I sold the certificates.

Anyways, last night I reassured myself of my purchase when I popped in 2001 in my Panny BD player. If you have watched the movie and want to see the Kuro at its best, watch that movie on BD. The blackness of space and depth in the picture are just incredible, totally different from my friends XBR4. His picture is good, but does not stack up to the Kuro in those aspects.

+1

They are overpriced. My 700U Panasonics are the next best thing for thousands less.

You can get the 5010 for less than that. It's $3,299 at J&R.

That's still way too much for what many are actually paying for the 6010. You can get it for far cheaper than that from one of the avsforum sponsors, like over $2,000 less. J&R also has it for $4,599.99. If you bought it at bestbuy, go back and pricematch it for J&R's price.

I believe he is talking about Canada. We regularly have to deal with outrageous prices.

Last week the 6010 was $5999 at Best Buy and Future Shop (owned by Best Buy).

Yes. Yet, the 5010 is a bit more reasonable. $4500 SRP and right now available for $3999.

The 6010 was $2000 off its normal price of a mind numbing $7999.

Seems odd that Pioneer would be pushing how incredible their blacks are in current Kuro sets on one hand, and then doing this comparison with their Extreme Contrast Concept set:

Don't you look at the 5010 and go YUCK?

A friend of mine (hi Jeff!) recently bought the 50" Panasonic 750 series, and "yuck" is not a word I would use to describe the picture. Yes, I prefered the Pioneer, but the Panny is damned fine.

It's just implying that while their older (or rather, current) ones are great, their future sets will absolutely blow the competitions out the water when it comes to blacks.

Same here! I could afford what ever I want, but in doing some research I bought a crap load of Panasonic's because of how well they are rated. Also, I tend to change my electronics almost every year (already replaced 2 Panny's less than 6 months old), so the price I'm paying for the Panasonic's is enough for the short time I will have them. As a matter of fact, a friend is buying a Panasonic plasma 42" 720p from me tomorrow that's only 3 months old and he getting it $500 cheaper than it sells in the store for still.

I'm currently waiting to get a Panasonic 70" or greater (no not the 103 or 150 ) when and if they produce one.

That's the relevant bit right there. Weren't last quarter retail sales in the US off more than 1.7% overall? This looks more like the result of a general economic slowdown than anything specific to Pioneer or plasma screen technology to me.

I'll probably contribute to their bottom line when the next-gen sets hit the market by giving my 5010 to my folks and picking up a pair of bigger sets for my sister and myself. The 5010 is killer but I can hardly wait for the next one!

Default They are rated/reviewed as Best

The Pioneers ARE the best. Also, I came in close 2nd getting a panasonic plasma. You'll be happy to know I switched from LCD. They have the best picture and it's easy to see the difference. Altho LCD and plasma may soon both be dead come OLED or something else.

They are not overly expensive... even the best of the best LCD's are expensive... such as the samsung LED backlit TV's.

The latest Sound and Vision magazine put the pioneer plasma against samsung's LED LCD TV. The plasma won for picture quality in the cover article Plasma vs LCD. I even am happier with my panasonic PZ750U rather than a samsung LED backlit LCD. The color reproduction is that much better... plus faster action... and 100,000 Hr panel. Wow... my TV will be replaced long before then anyways.

Plasma is best. I never thought I'd saythat since for the last 10 years I was an LCD junkie

My videophile friends are all getting plasma. Plasma's are for those who know better and are searching for picture quality/accuracy.
