I am sorry but it's in french!
Here is an approximate English translation:

t is scheduled for February 12: counter-attack HD DVD on the market of the DVD and the high definition! What will it occur on February 12? Olivier Van Wynendaele, Toshiba, person in charge Consumer good for Europe and Johnny Fewings, International Universal Pictures, envisaged to meet the press. After the defection of Warner towards HD DVD with the profit of Blu-ray, certain analysts predict already the victory of this last. They will evoke the repositioning of camp HD DVD started at the beginning of the year 2008. I give you a first impression of what one can await from this day: Will the policy marketing and tariff aggressive of Toshiba allow in France and at the total level to gain new consumers and to tip the scales in the other direction? Which is the strategy of repositioning started today by HD DVD on the market of the DVD? Where is the strategy of partnerships of HD DVD?

In otherwords,
COMPLETE CRAP

I agree with you. But i was a little bit surprised by this announcement. As if something really big is going to happen next week!

Maybe Toshiba will drop HD DVD

Yes. "Revenge" had a somewhat negative connotation to it so they axed it!

I believe that Feb 12th is when American Gangster is released, so I can imagine that Toshiba is going to make a big HD-DVD push. This would be similar to the Transformers and Bourne buzz, maybe a similar PR attempt like the Shrek 3 HD-DVD.

Maybe they'll drop the A30 to $99 and put the higher end models at a $150 price point. Retail industry was terrible this holiday season (I know, I do marketing for a retailer), so I can imagine that Toshiba is trying to rev it up a bit. February is also a dead time, since the new products come out starting in Spring.

They could also be timing this with the Senate passing that tax rebate bill, so Toshiba might be thinking that Americans will be wondering what to do with that $600...

Just my 2 cents.

All good except when Transformers and Bourne was released on DUD, HD VD was still a viable competitor. Much has changed in a very short time.

From someone who speaks fluently French (and who is actually French), it is just yet another press conference where the new marketing position of Toshiba is going to be discussed on the European level, nothing more.

Many people (possibly in the know) suggest following the initial post that Toshiba is going to anounce lower prices for Europe (following the US discounts) and a position as "Upscaling DVD" to the masses of their products.

Many posters that follow note that with Warner switching, 2 studios only will be far too small to support the format, even if Toshiba reverses the sales trend (which is very unlikely at this point).

Buy 3 HD DVD's and get a free Toshiba HD DVD player, good for upscaling DVD's...and, uhhhh...not much else. Well enjoy (somehow).

It sounds like just some propaganda from the French Toshiba SVP.

All it says is that Dumb (HD DUD Europe guy) and Dumber (Universal Europe guy) are going to meet the European press in a vain attempt to butter their bread: they will discuss Toshitba's reposisioning of HD DUD as an upconverting DVD solution and if their new aggressive firesale price slashing and marketing policies can possibly help gain a stronger foothold both in France and globably and possibly reverse the current trend of Blu-Ray domination (NOT!). In other words: USELLESS RESISTANCE.

The MUCH more interesting thing in that link is this VERY funny picture/drawing:

Fans of Asterix will recognize the opening page of all Asterix comic books.
It compares HD DUD to the small village of invicible Gaul warriors with their Magic Potion resisting the Roman Empire (Blu-Ray).

Unfortunately for HD DUD, Ken Graffeo did not fall into the cauldron of magic potion and the closest thing to HD DUD that could be found in Asterix's village is Assurancetourix (he is called "Cacofonix" in the english version).

He's the tone deaf bard that annoys everyone with his singing and constantly get's beaten up by EVERYONE.

Hardly even approximate.

There are enough of our French Blu brothers on this board that we don't need to see what some web-translator thinks it says.
