Default Far Cry 2 Devs drool over PS3's power

After all these months of whining about the PS3's complexity, it looks like some developers are finally manning up and realizing the PS3's raw technical prowess. Take that Gabe Newell! Upon hearing things like this, I'm real excited to see what's going to be cranked out in the next 2-3 years.

Quote:
"We were positively surprised by how efficient the SPUs (the Cell processing units) were to do such things as run our vegetation simulation, our animations or our physics systems. So while it did require quite a bit of R&D to understand how to use the system correctly, once we started having results we saw that it was a very capable console and that FC2 could run on it."

Elsewhere, Guay also touched on how the PS3’s Blu-ray drive and hard drive have facilitated the company’s efforts in terms of its ability to stream games in real-time, adding, “The hard drive and Blu-ray are making our life easy considering FC2 is an open world continuously streamed around the player.”

“That streaming bandwidth and disk space is very appreciated. So, in terms of AI, game structure, physics, dynamic time of day, open world gameplay, dynamic weather system, destructible vegetation, all of those things where we had really pushed the envelope technically, they run well on PS3.

For me this proves that any problems a developer has with a console is down to their skills as a programmer, not a fault with the console. You only have to look at a few recent titles on PS3 to see what a capable machine it is; all these whining devs are lazy. There are lazy people in every type of business; the games industry isn't exempt.

Nice to see the developers mention that. Thanks for the link.

No kidding. It makes EA's own admission within their earnings call from a couple of weeks ago that they continue to have difficulty coding for the PS3 seem pretty pathetic. Why in the hell can't the biggest game developer figure out how to code games successfully for the PS3? Crappy ports continue the false perception going out there that "the PS3 sucks" or "360 games look better."

It's ridiculous.

Agreed 100%

Ive been saying this for almost a year now. Skill and experience is what it boils down to. The PS3 has a very bright future ahead of it.

Yes it does. I hope the sales for games can pick up so we land some exclusivity deals for the PS. The exclusive games define a console and will be the best at tapping into a console's potential. I just look at Uncharted and drool, and that's only a year into the console's life.

And EA sucks at almost everything, especially the Sports division. Their 2008 line of games were ridiculously underwhelming on all consoles. Madden and NCAA 08 are the worst games I have played on the PS3 to date, and that's no exaggeration.

Once someone finally takes advantage of the Cell Broadband Engine, it's going to raise the bar for sure. And the developers that have been reluctant to essentially learn how to program again, will be regretting postponing they're adaptation in the natural process of evolution.

It used to be in the hands of the hardware how good a game is, but with mordern technology and the PS3 its mainly in the hands of how good the programmer is.

EA is a marketing company .. they have a bunch of incompetent programmers in general. People go there to be safe, get benefit packages and hide their incompetence and mediocrity..and they are obviously failing at that as well.

Ubi: PS3 Blu-ray And Hard Drive Big Help In Far Cry 2 Development

Far Cry 2 is an upcoming first person shooter that will be put out by Ubisoft on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC next month.

In a recent interview with CVG, Tech Director Dominic Guay talked about the process of developing for PlayStation 3, and he admitted that the Blu-ray was a big perk.

"The hard drive and Blu-ray are making our life easy considering FC2 is an open world continuously streamed around the player," said Guay.

"That streaming bandwidth and disk space is very appreciated. So, in terms of AI, game structure, physics, dynamic time of day, open world gameplay, dynamic weather system, destructible vegetation, all of those things where we had really pushed the envelope technically, they run well on PS3."

But no matter how good the PS3 specs are, Far Cry 2 for the console won't quite match the output on top of the line PCs.

"However, the good news is that since PS3 players are not outputting over the top resolutions like high end PC users, this is not a big deal," he explained.

I'm OK with this statement, because how many top of the line PCs cost $400 - $500?

Default Ubisoft loves the PS3s Blu-ray and hard drive

You wouldn't... besides Microsoft

Ubisoft loves the PS3s Blu-ray and hard drive
Friday, Feb 15th 2008 by Chris Scott Barr

In the past I’ve heard studios talking about how much of a pain in the ass it is to develop games for the PS3. Fanboys of the console hate hearing such remarks, so this little nugget of joy goes out to you. Apparently Ubisoft absolutely loves making games for the PS3.

During a recent interview, a member of the Ubisoft team was singing the praises of Sony’s flagship console. “The hard drive and Blu-ray are making our life easy considering FC2 is an open world continuously streamed around the player. That streaming bandwidth and disk space is very appreciated. So, in terms of AI, game structure, physics, dynamic time of day, open world gameplay, dynamic weather system, destructible vegetation, all of those things where we had really pushed the envelope technically, they run well on PS3.”

It’s good to hear someone talking up the good side of the PS3, rather than focusing on the negative (from a development standpoint)

If this were true then why is the new Splinter Cell exclusive for the Xbox 360? I am an old school fan of the series, one of my favorite series, and I am very disappointed that Conviction won't be coming to the PS3. Seems like it would have been a great game for us...
