Default Blu ray sountracks question.

Have a quick question. A friend of mine just purchased a PS3 that he uses as his blu ray player. He has an older receiver that is not hdmi. He went to watch Ice Age 2 and also Mr. Brooks. There was no sound. Looking into things further, both of those movies are using the new hd sound format, which is only available through hdmi. Is his only way around this,to go out and buy a hdmi receiver? Why are some blu ray discs soundtracks only available in the new hd format? He is just happy with just the regular 5.1 format,it does not have to be hd.

He needs to hook it up via optical, and he needs to set paramaters for DTS

This is all in his manual

HDMI supports all the codecs at the best quality. Most of the codecs are supported by optical, only a few are supported by analog. This means that on most titles, he will not be able to hear anything unless it has a lower quality codec included in it. If he switched to optical (and uses the PS3 settings to override the audio out making it optical), then he should be able to hear most everything (at least in 5.1).

SACDs are only through HDMI though.

He does have it hooked up via optical. If the only selection for sound is DTS Master Audio, like in Ice Age 2,is there a way to get around this.He said that he was still not able to get sound.

Does he have optical selected in the PS-3's sound settings?

He is going to check the setings when he goes home from work.So even if the only audio for a blu ray is DTS Master 5.1,he should get sound, correct?

Yes, you get the lossy DTS core when your equipment can't handle the full DTS-HD MA soundtrack. Even on ancient A/V equipment everyone should be able to enjoy at least some level of sound.

He figured it out. Had to change the sound options in the menu. Thanks for all the help.
