Default Questions about HDTV/PS3..

Ok, please let me say before you read on.. some of these questions may have been asked before.. but i'd appreciate the guy's here who know what they talk about to give me an answer, not a link.
I consider myself tech savvy.. but i'm new to HD and need some questions answered.

Ok, to start I got my HDTV in december, and so far have had nothing HD to watch.
I have HD Cable coming tomorrow, and the PS3 on the 23rd.

My TV only has DVI, no HDMI which has bugged me since day 1.
I have bought a HDMI>DVI cable, and plan to use this with a 4 way hdmi/dvi switch box.. so I can use my ps3/cable thru the one dvi port.

However, I seem to be reassured that DVI will provide me the same quality as HDMI would.. my TV is HD Ready.

However what is confusing me is what resolution I need to use when I get my PS3 to make the most of my BR's..

The manual for my tv says "Your TV has HD Ready feature, so it supports analouge YPbPr (component) and DVI (or HDMI) as a HD input to allow full compatibility with HD video sources.

The store where I got the TV says Resolution 1366 x 768 pixels.
Though, the manual says in a section under connecting your pc via dvi

DVI INPUT TYPICAL DISPLAY MODES
The display has a maximum resolution of 1280x720 vertical sync, frequency range of 50-60Hz and a horozontial sync. Frequency range 15-45KHz.
I'm not sure if thats just for pc input or not.

What i'm trying to figure out is.. are br's really going to look good on my supposed "hd" tv.. and what resolution should I output at with the PS3?

If it helps my tv was only £500 due to a strict budget (thats about $1000)

Any help is much appreciated.. try not to confuse me even further

You have a TV with a max resolution of 720p.

This is not good for BD's because the PS3 can only play BD's at 480p, 1080i and 1080p.
You can set the resolution in the PS3 for 720p so games will look great but it will automatically downconvert BD's to 480p

Try setting the PS3 at 1080i. It's slightly lower rez than 720p but you'd hardly notice it. Most displays will let the 1080i run through and then you can certainly play Blu-Ray's.

I have a 3rd generation plasma that only gets 720 and blu-ray looks fantastic on it. I selected 1080p on the PS3, so I assume the plasma is downconverting that (or maybe somehow showing that resolution native?). Whatever it's doing, the picture is absolutely stunning. Note that my plasma cannot handle a 720 input from the PS3. I don't understand why. I need to select 1080 to view any kind of HDTV signal.

DVI and HDMI are supposed to be interchangable. At the lower data rates this sould remain correct, at the higher data rates and other features of HDMI 1.3 I would be suprised if they work together. The DVI in your case will not be a problem (the PS3 maybe).
The "US" PS3's at the moment will NOT work with your TV unless your TV downconverts from 1080i, or you go down to 480p (not a great option when both devices are HD). The "US" PS3's used to down convert to 720p, but patch seems to have broken the 720p option (hopefully this will soon be rectified). With the "PAL" PS3's it's anyone's guess what they will or won't do. As there are some obvious changes with video output they may output @720p then again they maybe like their "US" sibblings, so until they arrive it would be a brave person to suggest what they can or can't do unless they have inside knowledge.

You will be fine with that setup. No trouble with HDMI to DVI as they are the same connection in essence.
