I am a newb.....but am very nervous in spending all this money on BD. Can someone give me some assurances I did the right thing? I went to Best Buy in Westminster, CO and they said HD-DVD was the way to go, and I know this is a BD friendly site, but I do welcome your feedback.

hd-dvd will not win. if this was last august i could see it happen. the only real advantage they had was the lower price but blu-ray is going down in price as the months go by and it will eventually be the sme as hd-dvd around this summer.
and blu-ray has the same studio support as hd-dvd except for universal. and blu-ray has disney, sony pictures, fox, lionsgate, and some others i cant think of. all of those are on blu-ray only not hd-dvd. and the only backer of hd-dvd is toshiba and some other company. blu-ray has sony, apple, samsung, panasonic pioneer and others plus blu-ray is outselling hd-dvd like crazy now. so you do the math |

Welcome to the forum.
There are a couple reasons why Blu-ray is in the position to win. First they have more industry support. Most movies currently on HD DVD are being released by Universal Studios, (aside from the neutrals). HD DVD only has really one major studio that releases movies, while Blu-ray enjoys the other 7 (which does include neutrals) such as Sony Pictures, Fox etc. Second, although it is more expensive, the facts are in that Blu-ray has an overall Picture Quality and Sound Quality advantage over HD DVD. Something like 3.94 compared to 3.8. Small difference but still... Third the PS3 is a major asset to the Blu-ray camp. The PS3 has brought about 2-3million Blu-ray players to the consumers. Usually the PS3 user knows about this and will buy at least one Blu-ray movie which makes Blu-ray a sure winner. The Xbox 360 add-on hasn't sold very many units since it is for the most part useless for gameplay. From websites such as thedvdwars.com, and dvdempire.com it has charts that show the impact of the above three. So far Blu-ray has surpassed HD DVD, which had been in the lead and is now having success and is selling 2-3 times more Blu-ray discs than HD DVD's. Enjoy the advantage of Hi-def ![]() |

As one first time poster to another, welcome. Although this is my first time posting I have been reading this forum daily for over the last 4 months. I would like to thank everyone else here for the wealth of information they share.
I do my homework before plunging into things and after doing mine I am now, as of a month ago, a proud owner of a PS3 and 25 BD's. When making the decision these are the three things that popped out to me. 1. Statistics - People lie and convolute the truth, statistics don't. Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD in every category and is doing so with an increasing margin. 2. BD Backers - I LOVE SONY! Some may think they are cocky, but they cannot argue that they are obsessed with quality & striving to be the best in whatever product they make (Love my 60" SXRD XBRT2 ![]() 3. HD-DVD Backers - Toshiba, Microsoft and Universal, not one of those names does anything for me. Toshiba and Microsoft make second-rate products and aren't companies I trust. Universal has some good movies, but not really any I can't wait till they put on Blu-Ray. You made the right choice. P.S. 1 thing I learned from the great people here is don't trust Best Buy sales people. Several shared first hand information that their manangement tells them what products to sell and they will lie to do so. |

I'm new to Blu Ray and i recently sold my Xbox 360 Hd Dvd add on for the PS3 and Blu Ray. In justifying my decision to friends i've been confronted with the comment that Hd Dvd landed the porn industry as it's backer so the fall of Blu Ray is near. I've enjoyed reading all of the insightful and knowledge filled comments by members on this site so i'm interested in hearing your responses.

Here is a link to a recent New York Post story about Blu-ray's "ascending," as they call it. http://www.nypost.com/seven/03082007...u_lumenick.htm
This is major newspaper, one which many people who do not know much about the format war read, so after reading this article they will think to buy a blu-ray if they wanted HD movies. This is pretty big for BR, as is The Departed selling 7,000 more copies on BR than on HD-DVD. I thought about getting the 360 HD add-on when it came out, and decided to wait. I got the PS3 because I wanted it for games, and then I would have a BR player if it won, hedging my bets. Now it looks like I will never need a HD-DVD player. They need a serious reversal of fortunes to counter BR's momentum. Two final comments: After Feb. 27th, the next date that HD-DVD will have new releases is March 27, while BR has the 13th, 20th, and 27th of March. They simply have more volume, as well. The PS3 is released in Europe, Australia, and other locations on March 23rd, so those markets don't even have access to the cheaper BR player. It will be huge once it hits in those places. Also, http://www.eproductwars.com/dvd/ This gives head-to-head matchups of HD-DVD and BR on Amazon.com, make sure to look at the sales rank for the respectively ranked products on that site. As of 12:30am on March 14th, the #1 BR is Casino Royale at 8th for overall DVD sales, and the #1 HD-DVD is Happy Feet at 130, once again for overall DVD sales. There is the disparity spelled out. |

read my response in this thread
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=6688 that is one of the reasons.an is exactly why HD-DVD would never win..an the way its going HD-DVD never will be used for any thing other than a back up device or a movie format only..we now have SOFTWARE GAME'S for the PC that needs more than one DVD....an to top it off we now have a a OS greater than the space of a DVD 9 ...15 GB... WINDOWS XP WAS LESS THAN 2GB...NOW THE PC OS jumps by a factor of (7) an microsoft is saying blu-ray is not needed...right.... ![]() |

You just have to take a leap of faith. I was as hesitant as you were when I was first considering the switch. Did some research...actually a lot, and realized blu-ray is the only way. And consider, we have 7 of the 8 mjor movie companies backing us:
Paramount Warner Bros. Disney (Buena Vista) Fox Lionsgate MGM Sony Pictures HD-DVD has 3 Clearly the consensus is also supported by the studios. And those aren't statistics, those are raw solid facts. Last edited by Valore; 03-14-2007 at 01:04 PM. |

No question about it BD will win. Casino Royale crank the top ten sales history in Amazon maybe worldwide and it is been the only BD title to fight and beat DVD sales and HD-DVD ,PS3 which i owned it's a Marvelous machine,at first i wasnt going to buy it because i prefer a blu-ray player but after what i have heard, listen, hearing and seeing it with my eyes i go forward and buy it with my eyes closed without any question.PS3 its incredible marvelous makes people like me going crazy. What's more we have more support of distributors and exclusively SONY,FOX,DISNEY..........
Enjoy BD ENJOY PS3 ENJOY high definition only and only on BD |

If you don't like Sony, there is always Samsung or Panasonic or Philips or Pioneer with more companies announcing Blu-ray by the month (almost). Whereas if you don't like Toshiba - well that's about it, unless you go for LG (but I hope you have plenty of money) and then you get a Blu-ray player and part of a HD-DVD player (and I mean part). Video quality at the moment is fairly close, however once a long movie, LOTR, 2001, Lawrence of Arabia etc blu-ray will really shine as they have another 20GB of "quality" to add, so while HD-DVD is slowing down the bit rate more as the length increases Blu-ray can sustain the full bit rate for about another 90 min and there are not many movies that break the 190 min mark, but plenty go over a 100 min

Does HD dud have a single blockbuster movie from last year or this that will be exclusive to them. None that I know. Sales will dictate who wins and new releases sell better than catalog titles. The numbers for Casino Royale is just the beginning of the end. Pirates, Spiderman, will see continued dominance of our format. We also have a new Fantastic Four flick which will be out in time for Xmas perhaps Spidey 3. Anybody that wants these will need a Blu-ray machine. So sales will continue to climb leaving HD Dud to sink just like the Titantic. Wheres an iceberg when you need one.
