Default very newb question about profile 2.0

I just bought a SonyBDP S-300 player last week and I am more than pleased. All I really want to do is watch high definition movies. But I keep reading things online about how people should wait and buy the profile 2.0 bd players. I've been searching the forum boards and I still don't understand what profile 2.0 players will specifically be able to do that my current bd player cannot? Any clarification will help.

Profile 2.0 is basically an ethernet connection. Down the road, BD Live, as they're calling 2.0, will offer interactive special features that connect through the web. Also will allow for firmware updates via the web.

Welcome!

Profile 1.1 players offer a secondary audio and video decoder to take advantage of features such as PiP (Picture in Picture). Profile 2.0 or BD Live provides internet activity via an ethernet port. This allows for other interactivity as well as firmware updates direct from the player. For the full technical difference click here.

I an not to sure on all of what they can do but here it goes. I think the only thing a profile 2.0 player can do that a say PS3 cant do is play some of the special features, like the dual screen.

Hey guys. I'm in the exact same situation as the OP, and I literally just signed up for this forum to ask the exact same question. Thanks for clearing that up, BStecke. I have one more quick question to add. I'm not so concerned with the online features, but I was wondering whether I would still be able to upgrade the firmware for my player without the web access in the future if necessary. Does anyone know if that will be a problem (or think it will)?

You just burn the firmware onto a CD-R if your player has no Ethernet connection (or even if it does you can still burn to CD-R). Each player comes with instructions for this.

No, firmware updates are done on a majority of players now without the ethernet port. You can either download the update and burn it onto a disc or order an update disc from the manufacturer.

Thanks for the information. I think I'll be just fine with my current BD player for a while. Internet connectivity is not something I'm interested in for my player. I just wanted to be sure that I could continue to play BD movies that are issued in the future.

You will definitely be able to do that.
