Apparently the UK PS3 can already playback 72% of the PS2 games released thus far. That's 1782 out of 2451. It's noted that there are issues for some of these games, but that's a pretty good number to start with. I'm not even sure if the 360 can playback 1000 xbox games yet, and at the rate they've been going they probably never will. |

Have some faith in sony, I'm pretty sure that sony will iron out all the bugs for older games to make sure that they run 100% right. It wouldn't make any sense to make a ps3 and then not have key franchise games not run 100% on the machine.

Honestly almost 3/4ths backards compatibility through software emulation is actually pretty good.

Sony are already way ahead of the Xbox 360 (and the b/c was something I counted on for the 360 so I was very disappointed by the relatively poor numbers)... and I have faith that furture updates will allow the majority of key titles to be played.

All the PS2 games I expect to play on PS3 are supported, all I need now is the usb memory card adaptor and I'm laughing.

I assume when you say "UK PS3", you mean the PAL PS3 (which includes the whole of continental Europe + Australia + New Zealand + "Soviet Union" + Middle East) So that 72% figure applies to all PAL PS3 units in general. Is this correct? EDIT: Just read the article hehe. Okay so it's now "EU PS3" that can play that 72% figure. So "EU PS3" = PAL PS3 (which includes those from Australia, New Zealand, "Soviet Union", Middle East and other possible PAL teritorries). Still correct or was something missed? I see. So it does apply to ALL PAL locations.
Then, it looks like gamers from the "whole of PAL land" shouldn't be disappointed with this figure that is way above the 50% mark for backwards compatibility. This is way way better than the XBOX 360 and it's sub-50% b/c rating... ![]() |

Sony is losing approximately $160 US on each 60GB model sold. They're losing even more money on the 20GB model as it is almost as expensive to manufacture as the 60GB model. Economically, it doesn't make much sense for them to continue manufacturing it because the vast majority of PS3's sold are 60GB models anyway. |
