Default I am about to buy a Blu-ray player

I am about to embark into a newfoundland of sound an audio, knowing that bluray won, and I'm not going to have to worry about being the person who bought the HD-DVD player which would have gone right next to the betamax

Since these players play at a higher bitrate, what about regular CD's? Will they sound BETTER than my regular CD player?

Its not the player that determines the bitrate. Its the disc itself.

I'm getting the Sony BDP-S300 to go along with my Sony HD LCD 40" V series.
Unless, I should just go with a playstation 3, but then I'm hearing they're nowhere near as good. If that's the truth, I'm sticking with it.

So then why is it that I hear that 256 bitrate CD's on a regular CD player will only play at 126?

before you buy the bdp-s300, how important are the advanced blu-ray profiles and HD audio codecs to you?

If you want to buy a player now, I would highly recommend the PS3. It is a bargain and an excellent Blu-ray player that looks to be the most future-proof. Plus you can play an occasional game and upconvert your DVDs as well.

CDs are 1440Kbps. The bitrate you choose to rip them at is your preference, but a bitrate of 192Kbps VBR AAC will sound pretty much identical to the original CD. The files will be 7.5 times smaller.

Avoid the Sony BDP-S300 if at all possible. It is slow and more money than it is worth. For a standalone, see about the Panasonic BD30 or the Sony PS3 if you don't mind a player, gaming machine and media center. SACD is more available in Europe than North America. Find a PS3 80GB for the future-proof Blu-ray player. It will also play CDs, SACDs, stream audio and video, and upscale DVDs.

I'm getting the Sony BDP-S300 to go along with my Sony HD LCD 40" V series.

I had the S300 and exchanged it for a PS3. The best move since deciding to invest in Blu-ray. Don't buy the S300, its not worth the money at all! Too slow, and will not support BD-Live.

In the interests of full disclosure there are drawbacks to the PS3:

1. No native IR control for universal remotes. There are some IR add-ons but they do not supply full control.
2. No serial or IR repeater input.
3. No 5.1 or 7.1 analog outs so you're limited to coax/toslink digital's DD+ or DTS 5.1 unless you have an HDMI audio capable receiver.
4. A bit noisier and hotter than a standalone.

I enjoy my PS3 and my standalone but the cost is great. I won't mind dropping another $1500 - $2000 US when the super 1.1 or 2.0 player ships. I doubt you'd regret a PS3 purchase. It feels good to have spent so little on an outstanding player and media center at the expense of those who buy lots of games.

Ah ah ah! The Panasonic DMP-BD30 is the most complete of the packages...not a complete package, but the most complete.
