Why, if the player is an older one it may well have better DAC's than his receiver.Pioneer has made some very good cd players over the years.

I actually use an old Samsung DVD player as a CD player. For some wierd reasons, the sound to me is much better by connecting the player's analog output to the analog input of the 3808 then if I run a Digital cable ( Coax ) to the 3808's CD digital input. It's more warm and have more bass while the sound thru digital sounds metallic and thin. Not make sense bec the 3808 supposedly should have better DACs. I'm still trying to figure what's why.

New Firmware for the 4308, 3808 in US and Canada : v1.73, Sub : 0.88. as of Aug 18th

if you had the 1.73 already, the Sub update is 17minutes, otherwise it's a 50min+ update.
