I'm a big fan of Denon now. Used to own both Denon and Yamaha receivers and bought into the overhype of Yahama "DSP simulation" but find most of them just gimmicks after extensive listening. Esp the Denon 3808 in particular is awesomely powerful and never run of watts even when tackling the most demanding soundtrack and at the same time also great for music.

Only drawback, a bit too complicated. I'm still reading the manual to figure out all the functions and features. Good luck and enjoy your receiver!

Btw here's how to use the 8 points Audyssey MultiXQ Setup

1- Mic straight up to the ceiling (pointing)
2 - Head Level

Front mesurement are done 2 feet in front
Rear measurement are done 2 feet in back

1 = Main listening area

After setup, put the speaker to Small, this was recommanded by the avsforum guy from Audyssey as this setting is not forced by Audyssey but by AVR Maker and he suggested to put it at Small to have bass return to the sub.. Unless you have Sub integrated to the speakers..

This was done according to info from the Audyssey guy from Avsforum (from the company) and you must use all 8 points to use the system correctly

Speaking of 3808 FW updates, has Denon ever documented what the new one does? Last time I checked their site did not even mention that there was an update but I installed one a couple months ago.

All this talk of the 3808 is getting me really frustrated that there's such a long wait for them in the UK. Ordered mine two weeks ago, but apparently Denon aren't expecting them till the 17th now, and thats for them to arrive in Germany, they have to get from there to the UK after that before I can finally own one!

The last version came out Feb 25 or Feb 28. (V1.69)

Check the AVS forum AV3808/4308/5308 FW Thread. All is there... when i mean ALL it's ALL

I have the 4308CI. Just for everyone's edification, the Audyssey doesn't always do the settings correctly. It botched the distances on my center channel, my sub, and one of the rear surrounds. I had to change them manually. Also some of the levels weren't right when I double checked w/ an SPL meter.

Home Theater Connections (Explained)

...scroll down to Optical.

Obviously you would need an Optical cable.

speaking of denon, I need some help with clearing up a doubt. I am being told the avr 1508 can not only pass the video from your player(ps3) to the television and at the ssame time pass the audio for you to take advantage of the pcm 5.1 and dolby true hd and dts master audio. Is this true? they say it is possible provided your tv is 1080i and not 1080p. How about the 1708 or 1908? and a low-budget customer.

Thanks.

If you must go with Denon, I would not get anything lower than the 1908. According to Denons HDMI specification chart...the 1508 and 1708 look to be "passthrough" = no good.

Multichannel PCM 24Bit/192kHz Audio Max Channels Supported:

1508 = NO
1708 = NO
1908 = 7.1

....if your on a tight budget, get an Onkyo 605.

Thanks for your reply, but this is where im having trouble, the receiver has 3 COAXIAL & 5 OPTICAL jacks available;

IN_______COAXIAL_______ ________OPTICAL_____________OUT

1 (DVD) 2 (TV/CBL) 3 (CD) 1(sat) 2(dvr) 3(vcr) / 2(dvr) 3(vcr)

I can't figure out which one is the input OPTICAL jack???

I was looking at the User Manual...I have to admit, DENON makes a really confusing manual!

anyways, you can connect the Optical able into any of these slots:

1 (sat)
2 (dvr)
3 (vcr)

personally for a CD player, I would use #3 (vcr). (the ones shaded are 'outputs')

...and just configure the vcr button for 'digital' audio.

Crackin, why is it you do not like Denon? With the widely publicized Onkyo lipsynch issues, I've been steering friends away from Onkyo to Denon, Yamaha or Pioneer Elite. Onkyo certainly has the price advantage. Just interested in your insight. Thanks.

Sorry, I did not intend for it to sound like I was objecting to Denon...I took it as the OP wants a Denon only...but being on a budget an Onkyo is wallet friendly...just an option for him to look at.

Just to clear the air...Denon makes some of the best Receivers around. I would never object to it.

Depending on the cd player model number, the left and right analog connection may sound better.

He said Pioneer CD player, so it is either doubtful, or a wash.
