I want the 70" XBR.
However, I have an issue with Sony's pricing. Lets look at PPI (price per inch) on thier XBR4 line. I am using todays discounted MSRP from Sony Style. KDL-40XBR4 @ $2,299.99 = $57.50 per inch KDL-46XBR4 @ $2,999.99 = $65.28 per inch KDL-52XBR4 @ $3,599.99 = $69.20 per inch KDL-70XBR3 @ $32,999.99 =$471.43 per inch....WTF? ![]() ![]() I might buy one if it were around $80.00 per inch, which would be $5,600.00. Or even $90.00 per inch at $6,300.00......in fact I would POUNCE on it for that. Any industry folks here that could help explain how SONY justifies this? Of course beligerent, sarcastic, funny comments are welcome as well. |

The 70" Samsung LCD
costs more if not similar to this panel if I'm not mistaken. http://www.lhdigital.co.uk/product_i...ucts_id=104534 Just that 70" are very few in number made, the costs are only for elitists rich folks. Mass production vs. Few in number cut usually drastically alters price. You won't find it cheaper by much. |

There's not a huge market for those, so for the few that want them - not only is there a short supply, but those that actually WANT one are going to have to pay for the incredibly high production costs associated with their manufacture. Do you know how many golden geese have to be slaughtered to keep up with the demand for gold thread? Goose food ain't cheap ya' know... But you just HAD to have the gold and diamond Banana Hammock, didn't you... No Snivelin'! Cheers, Doc. |

that's why i wouldn't pick it up from sony style i got my xbr4 40 for 1999.99 brand new in the box @ 0% 36months at a B&M store. right now fry's.com has the xbr4 46 @ 2499.99 man if that bad boy drops even more to 1999.99 which it could since the 5 is out stores will want to get rid of older stock crossing my fingers might consider picking it up. shop around you can find it for a better price fosho.

I think you are looking at it the wrong way. Your calculations are based on diagonal inches. If you figure out the cost by screen area and thus picture size (height of screen x width of screen), 40 inch xbr4 @ 685 sq in = $3.35/sq in 46 inch xbr4 @ 905 sq in = $3.31/sq in 52 inch xbr4 @ 1158 sq in = $3.10/sq in So they are all pretty much the same cost per picture area with a slight advantage to the 52 in. The 70 in TV is obviously a limited production special niche product that was never intended for the mass public. LCD screens that size are extremely difficult to make at this time - and that is the largest that is commercially available. The closest competitor I can think of is Sharp 65" Aquos at $10,000. The Sony has a much, much better picture. Sony was going to release a 70" XBR5 SXRD rear projection TV last month for $6000 ($2.86 per square inch), but they abandoned the rear projection market. I was able to get one of the last 70" xbr2 tv's they made, and I still haven't seen a better picture. |
