Default Chance of Player Scratching Discs?

whats the chances of a PS3 console scratching or damaging a disc while playing?

... apart from obviosuly knocking over the console when in use.

im asking because a friend had a dvd player that used to create slight hairline scratches on discs.

which made me wonder;

.. how could a player create scratches or damage a disc, when it just shines a laser onto the spinning disc?

How could it...scratch the disk...when the "laser" doesn't even touch the disk? How strong is the "laser"? Can it cause damage? I doubt it.

If it's a shoddy piece of equipment (e.g. XBOX 360) it can happen:

We'd previously reported that it's best to keep your console horizontal. Kassa reports that the problem is created by the TSST drive missing parts that stabilize the disc and prevent the drive's lens from coming into contact with the disc. The problem is mostly found in consoles produced in Dec. 2006, and the show estimates that 1 to 2 million units are affected.

Only to your eyes, if you look at it. I don't recommend it though

The only way for your player to scratch this disks, is if your player is defective. Then the company should replace your player, and likely your scratched disks. But the BD's are so tough, your player would have to be really defective.

If things become misaligned something other than the laser can cause scratches. I have seen this quite often with Laserdiscs. I used to work at a rental store years back and every once in a while we would get something back that had a circular scratch. I even had my player do that to one of my laserdiscs and by the time I noticed the noise and ejected the disc, there was a nice deep scratch in it.

it's also if the braking mechanism doesn't work right, and the hub pulls out before the disc stops
