All 3 are great quality receivers with excellent sound. You pretty much have to listen to them to make a decision. Sometimes it depends on the sound your looking for, do you like bright, crystal clear sound? or warm, full sound? Some say the receivers make the sound your looking for, I tend to believe its more the speakers, but thats just me. Anyway you cant go wrong with the 3 brands, listen to them and find one that fits your wallet!

Go with the Denon, or wait for the new Harman Kardons, and here is why-

A warm receiver can reproduce a bright sound source accurately, much more easily than a bright receiver can reproduce a warm sound source.

I have the Pio 92 as well. I like it a bunch. Great sound and power with a lot of good features. I was looking at the denon when I was shopping. They are more expensive, and has 1 less hdmi port. That was the deal breaker for me. Plus the denons have a cheap looking front face.

If you're looking for sound quality vs. features, I'd suggest the Marantz SR-7002 instead, which isn't too much more than the RX-V1800. Marantz IMO excels in delivering top notch audio in-a-box, especially if you like to listen to a lot of music. You won't get all the video processing and other features, but IMO that's the sacrifice for better overall sound which Marantz focuses on.

I'd also suggest a preamp-processor combo like Emotiva. Their upcoming hdmi 1.3a processor is due to release in April, and I believe you can get away with a preamp/amp combo like their UMC-1 processor (due in April) and LPA-1 7 ch. amp for around the same price. You're certainly guaranteed entery level separates sound quality at a mid-end receiver price.

Very true... I'll amend my suggestion to say either Denon or Marantz. Both sound superb, but you need the right speakers to make them shine.

You really can't wrong with any of those receivers. Many people like Denon because their receivers sound neutral. So the 2808ci below fits that bill.

The Yamaha is also an excellent receiver and it has Burr Brown DACs, so if 2-channel listening is important to you you may want to go this route. The RX V1800 fits that bill.

Either way, I think any of these receivers would do a fine job. You can't really go wrong and they are both competitively priced.

What NHT speakers do you have? They make solid loudspeakers.

I think going seperates is always a good idea. Having a dedicated amplifier for your speakers is preferred by many people, including me. The one thing you need to make sure of if you are using a receiver as a pre-amp is that the receiver has pre-outs. The Onkyo 605 does not have pre-outs, so it cannot be used as a pre-amp.

is it a bad thing to use a receiver for a pre-amp, will it down my sound quality if i use a less quality receiver. yea ur right about the onkyo 605 so i would probably get the 705. what type of amp should i get like, B&K, NAD, Parasound, or Rotel

I don't think it's a bad thing at all. Obviously, if you can afford to get a pre-amplifier by itself with all the bells and whistles (HDMI 1.3, Internal Decoding of DTS HD MA, Dolby True HD etc) then go ahead, but the list of pre-amps doing all that is VERY thin. A more cost effective measure would be to use a Receiver as a pre-amp.

As far as amplifiers go, I wholeheartedly recommend Rotel, but i'm sure the others you listed are fine in their own right.

I use the 1075 myself. Constant, clean and steady power. It's built like a sherman tank. I fully recommend it.

I'm considering either the XPA-5 or the LPA-1 myself (leaning toward the XPA-5 since it has balanced connections), however Rotel is already known for it's rock solid performance for it's price point. I've read constant recommendations on the 1075 specifically. It's a tough call since the XPA-5 reatails for $799 and has balanced connections, but the nice thing is since Emotiva is an online company they offer 30 days to demo their gear which should give you enough time to break the unit in and give it a good listen. The only thing you lose is the shipping cost if you decide to return it, but I think that's a fair trade.

I debated between the Pioneer Elite (91) and Denon 2808CI. From what I could gather, both are pretty equal. The Pioneer warmer and broader; the Denon a bit richer. Seems more or less personal preference. Both I'm told are above the Yamaha. I ended up with the Elite 91 which is an upgrade from my previous (non HDMI) Yamaha 59XX receiver even when listening to regular DD and DTS tracks.
