no word as of yet but Japan already has the Stand Alone Complex on Blu-Ray so maybe that might be coming to america later this year and thats bandai so no worries about the GITS series that were done by Bandai because they will eventually come to u.s. either this year or next

If they do bring it over, I hope they get the LMF to do the subtitles. The original runs subtitles were a joke compared to LMF.

The reviews I read of the Ghost in the Shell Bu-ray said that it was crap. The 2.0 sound is actually WORSE than the DTS 6.1 ES on the Special Edition DVD and the picture is only marginally better. It also has none of the extras of the SE DVD.

I read that the import was no good. The DVD was better, but also the American DVD sucks bad too.
I am very disappointed to be reading these kinds of reviews, but I only hope that a Blu-ray release done right will come to USA at a decent price.

Japan has SAC on Blu?? I didn't know that! Now I want that more than ever! GAH! I have the whole box set on DVD, my wife would never let me buy it again!

The 2.0 LPCM on the Blu-ray is the original Dolby Surround-encoded audio from the theatrical presentation. The DTS track was a cheap remix done for the US, it was never present on any Japanese release. I'll take the 2.0 LPCM any day (whether decoded with Dolby ProLogic II or left as stereo) over that worthless DTS track.

I generally don't care about extras either. But the video was a disappointment.

It's just the compilation movies and Solid State Society in a box set for 30,000 yen, and it's not out until July 25.

Don't blame you at all.
I ended up ebaying a few dvd lots that I never watch anymore to cover my pick ups.
I am fairly confident in saying that you will hear something about some US releases late summer.

Seriously if you want a good version of it, get the Australian Special edition, if you can handle a 576 line source. It is fully de-interlaceable and not pillarboxed.

The Blu Ray version is boxed (small black bars around all 4 sides - for overscanning displays...)

The Aus version

Hmmm. Advice from another white cat. But you are not wearing your Blu-ray goggles, so can I trust you?

LOL!

I hope Ghost in the Shell gets a US release - but they don't use the Japanese transfer.

I wish Bandai would start getting busy in Japan and the US with Blu Ray.

How many people here have actually seen GITS in 35mm? Back when it was new, not the same prints 10 years down the line

You'll find virtually all Japanese scans will be slightly pillarboxed, it's just how they do things there

Yes, GITS was done from an old master. Do I see Manga doing a new one if they can borrow the Japanese one? Probably not

Quality and Manga have never been synonyms (before anyone points it out, GITS TV is actually done by Bandai)

Never saw GITS in the theater. But I did see Innocence in Tokyo theatrically when it came out. The BD of that definitely does it justice. And I got it shortly after release when it was only about $50. First BD I bought.

Sorry, but I disagree. The 720p transfer of GITS from a Japanese HD TV channel is not pillarboxed. The DVD transfers aren't. The Patlabor Blus are not pillarboxed. The Honnemaise is pillarbozed to maintain the 1.66:1 AR (L&R only - NOT top and bottom also like GITS. Jin Roh isn't.
