Sorry if this has been asked before.
What is the big deal with DTS MA-HD and getting it on the PS3? Is it that much better than PCM and Dolby TrueHD? What titles even offer DTS MA-HD that doesn't offer one of the other? |

Bit by Bit its the same as both PCM and TrueHD. The reason its a big deal though is some titles don't have PCM and TrueHD tracks, just DTS HD-MA (all fox titles for example). If the PS3 can't decode the DTS HD MA, it gets downconverted into just regular DTS. As of now PS3 movie users cannot get lossless audio out of any Fox title.

So help me out here, even if my receiver can decode DTS-HD MA I still wont here it because my PS3 doesnt decode it???? I was under the impression that as long as my receiver did the decoding I would get DTS-HD MA

Both Lossless, therefore both sound the same but DTS-HD MA takes less space since it's a compressed format vs. LPCM. Also, the DTS-HD MA contains within it a regular DTS soundtrack for those who only have legacy A/V receivers and takes up even less space since there is no need to provide a seperate legacy audio track because it's included "built-in". DTS-HD MA is superior to Dolby TrueHD because it does'nt use Dialog Normalization + Dolby TrueHD does not contain Dolby Digital built-in and therefore the legacy soundtrack must be provided seperately requiring more waste of space on the Blu-Ray disc.

right. if you are using a ps3 you are not getting DTS HD MA right now. Supposedly its going to support it shortly though.

Not at the moment. To get it, either the PS3 must bitstream MA to your receiver for decoding (this isn't happening and won't happen as the PS3 cannot bitstream the codec) or the PS3 must decode MA to MPCM and send it to your receiver. This latter scenario is what everyone is waiting for.

I think most, if not all Fox titles have DTS-HD Master Lossless Audio. Anyway, hope that helps. ![]() |
