i was set for the longest time on getting the 705 but have advised against it and i now want the onkyo 605.
i know most of the differences between the two but for me im just looking for the cheapest (yet most reliable) way to receive hd audio. hence the 605.. i just had one question... i would like to receive the hd audio from my 360, ps3 and hd cable box (hence 3 hdmi ins) and i know the 605 only has 2. so if i were to unplug lets say the hd cable box from the receiver to put in the hdmi for the ps3 and continue switching these time and time again and even switching between all 3 consoles/box, would there be any complications? (for example, maybe i would have to keep adjusting settings for the ps3 everytime i plug it in because i unplugged the hdmi to begin with? or would i start getting lip sync issues because of switching them?) i would really like to save the extra money in getting the 605 over the 705 and spend it towards my speakers any help would be appreciated |

I would go to monoprice.com and get myself a cheap HDMI switchbox! Then I wouldn't have to worry. |

theres no real need to connect the cable box through the receiver...unless your TV doesnt have enough inputs.
Optical audio cable is plenty. Heck, you could even connect the cable box via component cable. 1080i max and no lossless audio, hdmi has no real advantage. |

but you're saying i could use the 2 hdmi ins on the receiver for the 360 & ps3 and just use optical for the cable box since there is no lossless anyway? Last edited by Erman_94; 03-23-2008 at 09:08 PM. |

also, going directly to the TV with your cable box means you do not have to share the same picture settings (brightness, contrast, color etc) with the devices going through the receiver. Its actually an advantage. ![]() |

im not very audio savvy so bare with me on this very stupid question
![]() if my cable box is in no way connected to the receiver and is straight to the tv, how will i hear cable channels with the speakers? wouldnt the speakers be connected to the receiver, which means i cant also connect them to the back of my cable box? |

you connect an Optical cable from the cable box to the Receiver.
(and you probably can even connect red/white analog from cable box to the TV so you can watch and hear tv without the receiver being on...my DISHNetwork lets me output audio over both, maybe yours could too?) |

![]() and as I said, doing it this way you will not have to share display settings. This means you can calibrate your TV to its optimal for Bluray and Cable without having to share, sharing could make one or the other look out of wack. Last edited by crackinhedz; 03-23-2008 at 09:26 PM. |

so do you still recommend not hooking the cable box through the receiver because of sharing display settings or was that just a solution because i didnt have enough ins? |

Calibrate your HDMI #1 input. Calibrate your HDMI #2 input. ...say you have your PS3/Xbox into #2, calibrate it for Bluray. This may or may not look good for the Xbox360, but it should be close enough to live with. Your Bluray movies will look pristine. So now you can calibrate for your HD cable box seperately, and make your HD cable look as good as possible. |
