Default Does PS3 play Blu-ray movies at 1080i?

I'm about to get a PS3 and I have a 55' Sony Grand Wega TV that supports 480i/p, 720i/p, and 1080i. I heard that the PS3 has scaling problems, so I wanted to know if the PS3 will play my Blu-ray movies at 1080i.

Brilliant question.......i was also thinking about that.....

but now am VERY VERY confused....

I was tempted to buy the Samsung BD-P1000 because of the "backward compatibility with DVD"....."converts your existing DVDs to near High Definition".....

But the above link suggest that this can't be done? (unless I'm not getting something as I'm a newbie)

why not 720p? cause my HDTV cant do 1080p but it can do 720p which looks so much better than the 1080i picture.

720p can only look better then 1080i if your tv is 720p natively and sony is relay pushing full hd the sony as of know the ps3 can scale stuff fine(if u load cretin typs of formats on hard drive) . but relay if your buying into blu-ray now you should have a 1080p set but it is not necessary. (just wondering what kind of tv do you have?)

What are you confused about?

Some Blu-ray players will do the deinterlacing/upscaling of the DVDs 480i signal to 480P and/or 720p/1080i/1080p by themselves, or you can let your display do it.

For example, the PS3 can send the 480i DVD signal deinterlaced as 480p or as 480i (depending of connector) so your display has to do the job fitting that into your screen.

As I said before it then depends on which device (player or display) does the better job.

The PS3 will also send a 720p signal from 720p games and a 1080i or 1080p signal from 1080 games or Blu-rays. If your display accepts these signals, it also fits them onto your screen.

The PS3 has been said that it may get at some point a firmware update so if it does, then it may handle this. At the moment it will be your display.
