Default Worried about new films being made.

The audio/Video improvements have been great. I'm even talking about when the theaters first started doing the "THX" certification and "Digital" theaters, etc..... We have better audio/video quality in our homes, and that's great too. I have a concern though, as I believe the trend has already started.

I'd like to preface by saying "please don't focus on any individual title I mention"

O.K..... we know via Life of Brian, Blazing Saddles, Michael Clayton, etc.... that Dramas and Comedies can look really good in Blu-Ray also, but my concern is since Action-Adventure/Sci-Fi etc. with special affects sell so well.... even to the point where people will trade off plot/character development etc. Less and less movies like "Sideways" or Memento for that matter, which are more plot and character driven movies will be produced because studios will have a better chance for a return on their investment if they pump out Die-Hard 7 (Slow-Cancer-Death) rather than putting out more art-house type of films..... I know there will always be small companies putting out content-based niche-market material, and that's great, and I realize as long as you're an enthusiast, like most of us here (movie wise, not just blu-wise) we'll seek out the gems amongst the turds.....

Without getting too long-winded, I'm just concerned I guess.... worried that less budget is gonna be open for dramas etc. because action looks and sounds so much better, and as I said, this trend started BEFORE Blu-ray existed.....

Anyone else see this happening also?

Film lover first. Blu-ray lover second.

Writing, directing, acting first. Visual and sound effects second.

But then you get amazing shows like BSG that have EVERYTHING. The drama, excitment, and great SFX all rolled into one. It can be done!

That's not true. Blu-ray isn't superior to 35mm film projection. And it isn't superior to digital cinema, not even the 2K format.

Commercial movie theaters that do a poor job in the area of presentation quality do not speak for the entire theater industry and the film or video formats they use to show movies.

When 35mm film projection is done right it blows away the quality of Blu-ray.

Digital cinema set up right accomplishes the same thing. In sheer numbers, its maximum bit rates are more than 5 times higher than the maximum bandwidth of Blu-ray. D-cinema can and does run JPEG2000 based movies at bit rates up to 250 million bits per second.

That's not going to happen as long as true film fans continue to visit commercial movie theaters. As long as the movie theaters are around big movies can be made. If you have no commercial theaters then you will have nothing but little tiny unremarkable made for TV movies.

The group of people who pride themselves on never going to a movie theater had better wake up and realize there is no movie industry without commercial theaters. It seems like they're rooting for movie theaters to disappear and that's just plain, bat-$#!+ crazy. Such a thing would be very negative for home theater.

There will always be a market for special effects spectacles as there have been for years and years.

But, there is also a huge market for people who demand more from a movie. That audience isn't dwindling.

Case in point...had 10,000 BC won for Best Picture, we'd have something to be concerned about.

sorry.... by this, I meant we have better audio/video in our homes compared to years past, I didn't mean it was better than movie-theater, and I'm not joining the Home-theater vs. going to the movie-theater debate...... I recognize them as two separate things.....
