Default Samsung Electronics to Release DUO HD Player

I am seeing several HD-DVD fans on different boards quote this Korea News wire as factual.
http://www.koreanewswire.co.kr/en_read.php?id=241929&no=0&nmode=&ca=&ca1=English-&ca2=&sf=&st=&of=&nwof=&conttype=&tm=1&type=&hotis sue=&sdate=&eflag=&emonth=&spno=&exid=&rg1=&rg2=&r g3=&tt=

I think this player is still a rumor only. I just checked Samsungs website and I see no press releases regarding a universal player.

If LG and Samsung start coming out with Universal players under $1,000 that are 100% functional for both formats then the format war well be over. Both optical formats will coexist. If this is true and Samsung comes out with a universal player other companies most likely will follow. Maybe Pioneer will come out with a universal player since they are known for their excellent combo players like Laserdisc/DVD and DVD-Audio/Super Audio CD players.
If Universal Studios would release movies in Blu-ray there would be no reason to own a combo player that plays both Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Universal Studios staying HD-DVD exclusive is creating a demand for combo players. One day I might purchase several combo players when I upgrade all my DVD players. I and 95% of the rest of the world are not going to purchase both a HD-DVD player and Blu-ray player for every room in the house. I am getting tired of this format war, Universal Studios is going to cause both formats to coexist by being exclusive to HD-DVD, which will result in manufactories making combo players. I was afraid this might happen.

P.S.

In the Beta and VHS battle there was no universal players. In the VHS versus DVD battle there was several universal combo machines made. DVD won and standalone VHS machines are no longer made. Perhaps HD-DVD will coexist for several years until Blu-ray wins the format war.

These players to some extent will be held back by people who do not wish to buy Korean - in the same way that some people don't like to buy Toshiba

It does give HD DVD a little more reason to exist for a little longer, but in the grand scheme of things I think it make little difference.

If Sony, Panasonic or Pioneer made such a machine it would be different I think...

This is great news for Blu-ray!!! More players=more disc sales. BD has more titles, and more studio support so they'll benefit more from this than HDDVD.
DO you think this will help HDDVD much when alot of the discs (combo's)cost $5 more because they have the standard def dvd on the otherside. People buying these are obviously trying to get away from that aren't they???

If this was a standalone Sammy HDDVD player, i'd say BD had something to worry about, but as it sits...this only helps universal pictures and the BDA.
I posted this over at HDDVD.com I figured i'd bring it here too!

If this rumor is true then LG, Samsung, and other companies well be able to make quality combo players. Many consumers will want to purchase combo players only now. Combo players that work correctly are good for the consumer but bad for companies that make HD-DVD only players and BLU-RAY only players. When LG and Samsung start selling combo players for under $600 then the mainstream consumer will want to purchase working combo player so they will be able to collect movies from both Universal Studios, Disney, Fox, and Sony. Universal players will hurt the sales of HD-DVD only and BLU-RAY only players. Several manufactories might start making Universal players so that consumers will buy players. Consumer demand will force just about every company to make combo players. It will be like a domino effect. Once one company is able to make a combo player under $600 that works correctly, everyone else will need to make combo players or lose out on sales. A similar thing happen with DVD + and - R and with Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio.

Universal studios is the only major studio that is HD-DVD exclusive and has the power to end this stupid format war by releasing movies in Blu-ray. Universal Studios releasing movies in Blu-ray equals no need for combo players.

HD DVD's goal is to co-exist with Blu-ray, but it seems no industry professional thinks they can co-exist and take over DVD.

The royalties game is a B!

Of course that is true and why Universal hasn't ended the lunacy is beyond my understanding.

Samsung has to develop at least single complex construction drive and has to built in defferent two sets of softoware layer and these hardware requirements in one body.

I am now interested in how much this player acutually costs.

And in short term, this announce will inevitably defeat sales of Toshiba players.

This rumor again?!?!

I'm sorry, but my arguments against combo discs apply again to something like this. It's the same discussion we had over the LG dual format player: It's a needless stall and delay tactic that keeps HD-DVD alive by a string. It's a charity bone.

But why bother? If I were out there right now and I bought something like this, why the hell would any CE company go through this kind of trouble to throw charity to a format all for Universal disc titles?

What a waste of time, money, and material!

Yes, I know some people will call it a "indirect sabotage" and make up some other nice things to soften the blow, but frankly, this is starting to reek of an SACD vs. DVD-A type situation.

I just can't believe ANY CE company would be foolish enough to follow LG's lead on this.

That being said: This rumor can't ever die, it seems. It's been a few months since we'd last heard it, so I guess we were due up for it again.

Read this thread. Especially post 13.

If you really have people drinking Kool Aid like the Warner person quoted in post 13, then that may help shed some light on this for us.

Thanks, last night the Samsung site did not have the info posted only a Korean site. I now see it is officially. Samsung just killed the sales of its BDP-1200 player. When Samsung first released the BDP-1000 it damaged the Blu-Ray camp launch image since the firmware in the player had problems and the players received bad reviews. Now Samsung is damaging the Blu-ray camp again by going combo.

If combo players become the norm and both formats co-exist, neither format will be adopted by the mainstream. I'd bet on it.

This war is starting to get annoying, it would be so easy to end it now but instead companies look for ways to prolong it. It's a money maker.

This news is really ticking me off. I was all set to upgrade all my DVD players with a Sony BDP-S300 in July-August, now I will be waiting on combo players for around $500-$600. This is a chain reaction other companies will follow. Sony needs to convince Universal Studios to release in Blu-ray soon or millions of people will start buying combo players for around $400 from several different companies one day. (Possible late 2008).

I wish the CEO’s or some executive at Best Buy and Circuit City would just stop carrying HD-DVD software. Let the retail stores make the decision on which format should win. If Best Buy and Circuit City stopped carrying HD-DVD product then long term they would increase overall sales since there would be just one HDTV format.

it may already be heading that way. Last month many Best Buy's had massive send backs of HDDVD software. Also some wal-farts are appearing to only carry Blu-ray now. My local Fry's and I've read some others have increased their BD sections to two 4 ft. sections, meanwhile the HDDVD area remained at 4ft. This growth rate for BD and shrinkage for HDDVD continues at retail, what do you think will happen? Hell even amazon's available title list has decreased by what 10%?

Sorry folks if I keep repeating myself, in away this story is really ticking me off. Now both LG and Samsung are making combo players. My hope was that Universal Studios would have started releasing movies in BLU-RAY and there would be no market for combo players. Both formats are now going to coexist. Once quality Universal players reach around $500 then sales of both Toshiba HD-DVD players and Sony BLU-RAY players will suffer. I now expect many more companies coming out with universal players in late 2008 for under $500.
I was planning on upgrading all my DVD players with the Sony BDP-S300 this July or August but now am going to hold off for Universal HDTV players for under $1000. As the way it looks now I will be upgrading all my DVD players with a universal player when they hit the under $500 price point.
Universal players will only cause both formats to coexist especially when some studios release better soundtracks on HD-DVD titles. With a universal player consumers will be able to choose a title based on which version has the best picture and sound quality.

I am a movie collector first wanting the best sound and picture quality regardless of format.

I do not currently own any HD-DVD movies but with universal players coming that work correctly in both formats that will change. Universal Studios caused this to happen by not releasing in BLU-RAY.
