Default No Country: SD to HD Upgrade Value?

Hello everyone!

My very post here, but I've been an avid lurker for quite awhile.

I finally made the transition (or I should say my fiancee finally let me) from a 720p/1080i home theater TV setup to a brand new Panny 50PZ700U + Panny BD30 player configuration.

I am a religious movie buff and have an SD collection of approximately 1300 DVDs. Today we snagged No Country For Old Men our 2nd BD (Apocalypto was the first; one of her faves and a flick we didn't already have in our SD library) after having researched reviews saying the transfer and AQ are top-notch.

However, I'm still a bit hesitant to crack it open since, as can be assumed, I also purchased the SD DVD a couple of weeks back. Can anyone who has both formats or seen both give some sort of feedback/opinion as to whether the upgrade is worth it?. Or does the SD DVD suffice?

I've "double-dipped" SD DVDs before and have usually offloaded the inferior copy to friends and family, so I could get rid of the SD NCFOM, but it's the loss of the initial $15 and the $9 extra cost of the new disc that gives me pause.

Any help much appreciated. Got to put one of these badboys in here

Remember, I have yet to open the BD, so there has been no side-by-side comparison on my part. I'm asking others about their experience before I break the seal.

No Country For Old Men looks and sounds fabulous on Blu-ray and easily beats the dvd in all aspects. This is a no-brainer choice to go with the Blu-ray.

like every new release, the blu ray is far superior.

with regards to this particular one, it is stunning. it's pretty clear i think that you have yet to get used to blu rays. after you start buying them and watching them, you won't be able to watch DVDs. well you will, but it will likely frustrate you as such a religious movie buff. you won't be watch a movie without wishing you had it on blu...

I don't have it yet(on the way), but I can tell you that this is not the place to go to get both sides of the argument. You will find Blu-ray supporters here and most of them are pretty millitant about it.
Your best bet is to develop your own formula for double dipping based on all the reviews you can get a hold of.I also have a large DVD collection and I don't automatically buy everything on Blu based on the cost mostly.
Having said all that NCFOM was an incredible film and I would need to buy it on Blu.

I've seen both versions. My brother-in-law and I watched my BD first and we were amazed by the picture quality and the detail...it was much more immersive than the theater. Then we watched his DVD at my other brother-in-laws house and I was amazed at how flat and washed out the DVD looked. The opening scenes had no kick, and I wasn't pulled into the cinematography like the BD. To me this went much further than your normal upgrade because there are a lot of awesome outdoor scenes in this movie where the detail, lighting, and color definitely warrant a double dip if you already own the DVD.

well which do u perfer 480 lines of definition or 1080? the 1080 seems to be a Higher Definition of picture.

amazing

I can see with older movies them having a bad transfer but any new movie that comes out is going to look 10 times better on bluray.

The BD looks magnificent. Just flick between the crappy SD features and the movie for an idea.

DVDs will typically look better than the special features...even at 480. Mostly due to up converting from the DVD and not the special features of the BD. Sometimes those featurettes in the special features look like VHS.

It looks and sounds spectacular. It's a new movie on blu-ray, so you can almost always expect it to be superb in picture and sound.

Watched NCFOM last night on Blu.

Excellent in every way. Just bung it in to your Panny and... enjoy!

I agree wih everyone. The BD was stunning. The detail, even in the barren landscapes, was amazing.

Didn't the DVD come with a $10 off coupon for buying the Blu-ray? If you can unload the DVD for a decent buck, then that justifies the upgrade even more.
