Although I have perhaps 10 Criterion DVD's (many of which I never got around to watching), I don't really care for Criterion in general.
They preached about quality and look how long it took them to release animorphic dvds. (Not to mention many films I love like Walkabout for example where single layer DVD9, non-animorphic widescreen, with the DVD flag set to 4:3 so it gets letterboxed on all sides with some players, ... ie the just didn't care or they were clueless!) It was sort of a false pride pretending to be about high quality while re-using thier existing Laserdisc transfers and selling for top dollar. I'm glad they faded out to some extent, I certainly don't miss them. I wouldn't want them near Blu Ray for fear of single layer discs containing upconverted LD transfers from thier vaults selling for $60 each ![]() -Brian Last edited by bhampton; 09-03-2007 at 09:26 AM. |

Their entire catalog!
Likewise for Janus. And while I'm at it, the entire catalog likewise for : New Yorker Films Sony Pictures Classics Ruscico To really get a jump on the format war, if all these were released on blu-ray, to concept of a format war would be a moot point. ( "Moot" as in : deprived of practical significance.) Come on guys (Cr, Ja, NYF, SPC, Ru, etc) jump on board - that would guarantee the future of the format! |

RoboCop and Silence of the Lambs.
Even though I do currently own both I would love to compare them. I know Its wishful thinking since they are both out of print which usually means they no longer have the rights to them. Last edited by bootman; 09-04-2007 at 02:08 AM. |

Kurosawa.
They also have rights to some pretty sick Hitchock films like Notorious. |

I'd like to see the whole catalog as well as all the HVE properties Image Entertainment nabbed when they nabbed Criterion from them. I want Fukasaku.

There's really too many titles to mention. Criterion has released some of the best films ever made, and usually they did a good job at it. They feature extensive extras and excellent graphic design.
But. They tend to be a bit thick when it comes to technical issues. They disliked anamorphic enhancement for some unfathomable reason, and these days, they insist on windowboxing 3:4 images. It's almost like I can already see them offering lossy audio and MPEG-2 encodes on BD-25 discs once they switch to Blu-ray, with lots of Amir-style explanations that it's good enough. Wish I were proven wrong, of course. A much smaller, yet in many ways classier label, the British Eureka / Masters of Cinema, is my publisher of choice for classic cinema, not least because they care so much more about the silent era, especially the German Weimar cinema -- my personal favorite. Yet they don't seem to have much clue about Blu-ray either. So I'm not holding my breath. Coming back to Criterion -- It's going to be tough getting The Thief of Baghdad in standard definition, you know. It's almost a waste to produce such definitive editions of amazing old movies to the soon-to-be-obsolete DVD spec... |

1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers. There was never even a decent anamorphic DVD release.
I think Universal has the rights now. There were recent German and UK DVD releases, but both were non-anamorphic and sub-par even by DVD standards. I still have the CAV Criterion LaserDisc with the commentary track. |
