Hey all,
I'm sitting here watching Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring, on TNTHD. This one of the better looking HD movies I've seen from a cable/satellite provider. Is this the same thing we'll see on Blu when that glorious day arrives and we get these movies, or will it be better? I'm aware of cable/sat compression and HD-lite, so I'd think the quality of a blu release would be noticeably better, but am wondering if anyone has a good website or anything else that discusses how they treat the film when they prep it for tv vs. dvd and blu. |

I bought the 3rd season of Lost on BD, and I've seen all three seasons in glorious HD via AT&T Dishnetwork. I have to say that if the BD version is gong to be better than what I've seen on TV then I don't think I'll survive just how beatiful the BD presentation will be. This very well may be my last post because I need to go look at the Jacob's Cabin episode in slo-mo.

I apologize in advance if this is a dumb question, but I've wondered this for some time: If LOTR is being shown in HD on TNT, then why can it not be transfered to BD rather simply? This is not a LOTR specific question, but applies to any movies currently being shown on HD cable/sat, but not available on BD yet. Is it simply a matter of the film owners (for whatever various reasons) not "wanting" to do it?

It looks way too good to be upconverted. The up close facial details are great, and even on TNT, it looks better than many Blu-ray transfers.

Spike HD was showing the star wars films and they also looked fantastic! I do not have the pay channels so I missed these when they were shown on HBO.
I saw the LOTR films in HD last year and I agree the Blu-Rays for these films will be great. ![]() |

Sorry but you are freakin insane if you think the picture quality was not good for the lotr movies this weekend. Sorry to say but if it goes to blu the picture will only be slightly better, what blu does well and better then anything is sound. |

Actually, and despite the gorgeous pictures and scenery, I found the images to be fairly soft in this HD presentation.
I am quite sure a big part of it is a deliberate choice from the filmmaker, but I do believe that a good Blu Ray encode could deliver a much better picture ![]() All in all though, it was stunning, and a great way to revisit Middle Earth. |

it's all a matter of how they get there hd movies from the studio....If there
given an extremely clean 1080i copythat's a direct transfer, it's gonna look great.... If there just upscaling it's not gonna be as nice.... But the highest resolution on my directv is 1080i....Not the 1080p we'll get when it FINALLY goes blu |

Yeah, the BD will have the advantage, the look and sound will be much better.

If I zoomed in to simulate the cropping that took place it was almost a wash. (mind you not all DVDs upconvert this well. LOTR trilogy is a fine pressing for a DVD) Now just the dvd without the processor doing all the work was not as good. But not everyone here is nuts enough to own a $2K midrange video processor to upconvert DVDs. ![]() Last edited by bootman; 04-08-2008 at 02:29 AM. |

I watched the end of both TTT and ROTK on TNT. It looked VERY good. I absolutely believe it will be mind-blowing when the Blu-day comes. There is no question in my mind. Peter Jackson demands were very high with respect to the CGI in the film. I think he'd be just as demanding with the Blu-ray encode (thank GOD).
