Default Microsoft tactics as expected

this is exactily why MICROSOFT IS SO CRAPTASTIC....btw thanks Samsung...

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer riled the open-source community a few weeks later when he openly said that because of Linux’s unauthorized use of Microsoft intellectual property, "every Linux customer basically has an undisclosed balance-sheet liability."

Microsoft will gain access to Samsung’s large patent portfolio "relating to digital media and computer-related inventions.

I see the Borg are back on the move and back in full "assimilate everything in our path" mode.

"Resistance is futile."

If you can't beat 'em...strong arm 'em, bribe 'em, or buy 'em out.

"Oh, and release the announcement of your combo player months early, if you know what's good for you!"

Interesting tie-in to Penton-man's comments.

It's certainly obvious that some of MS's FUD got through to someone just enough to have them make these kinds of "hedge betting" actions and recent talk they've put out.

Well now I guess Samsung will start producing more and more shoddy products as well..I assume they were promised 360 and/or future contracts in exchange and to maybe to fix the quality problems currently plaguing the 360?

This is also relates to why the U.S gov't was never serious about breaking up MS into separate companies - it was really just a pretend trial for appearances.

Sony's investment in their own memory sticks doesn't seem so crazy now does it

I won't be

Obviously OEM'd stuff would be more difficult to avoid but still possible

Went with the SXRD vs the sammy DLP. It was just a better T.V in the end. But even there, because of the Sony/Samsung relationships it's impossible to completely avoid them.

As I said in another post it comes down to who gets the lions share of my money.

Addendum: Don't buy any products from a company that is supporting HD-DVD and/or supporting the needless prolonging of this format war in any way, shape, or form.

F Microsoft and their baseless claims. Does this mean that anything that is produced on a computer is automatically M$ intellectual property?

I mean it's impossible for non-Microsoft entities to come up with ideas right?

This format war is starting to get interesting. We might start seeing Microsoft make business agreements with other consumer electronics manufactories. In late 2008 under $500 combo players will most likely be the norm from several different companies. Both formats are going to coexist now since Universal Studios has decided to remain exclusive to HD-DVD and more combo players are coming to market.
By the way I like Microsoft products like Widows Vista 64 bit Ultimate Edition. It’s just so amazing the money and power that Microsoft has. If Microsoft was not backing HD-DVD the Sony BLU-RAY format might have already won this so called format war.

HD-DVD will be all but dead by late 08. HD-DVD will die off with or without universal support.

Betamax had support but VHS had more. People will always pick the format that has better support.

Scary notion, but I believe they own a patent on interactivity. The patent is so broad in scope that there is no way they will be able to defend it in court, however; with their unlimited funding they can tie it up in court for a exasperated amount of time. Dirty dirty.

I don't post often but I posted this before: as much as I would prefer for Blu-ray to win decisively, I think the formats will end up co-existing.

The fact that Blu-ray survived the early tactics of the HD-DVD camp is a tribute to its superiority. However you cannot compare to VHS vs. Beta and studio support because a company like Microsoft was not in the picture back then (at least not in that format war).

The reality is that Microsoft IS in this format war and they have the means and the will to see it thru. In this case, to see it thru co-existing formats until they can get all their downloadable pieces into place.

I keep mentioning this not to discourage people supporting Blu-ray but rather to avoid setting yourself up for disappointment when to your dismay, HD-DVD doesn't die and combo players become the norm.

That's sort of like the definition of racketeering. Hence RICO. They just haven't been caught yet.

It doesn't matter to me because I will never support an inferior format like HDDVD out of principle alone. I can live without Universal studios movies as long as I get 90% of the content out there on Blu-ray I'm happy. I will never buy a dual format player. The only thing HDDVD and its simple minded supporters are doing is prohibiting the mass adoption of HD media.
